For regular firewood cutting, storm cleanup, and demanding property maintenance, compare chainsaws by the work they must handle and the operator’s experience—not by a “best overall” label. STIHL lists the MS 271 FARM BOSS in its Farm & Ranch category, making it a candidate to compare for those jobs, but that manufacturer classification is not an independent finding that it is the best saw for every property.

What types of chainsaws are available?

STIHL groups its saws into homeowner, Farm & Ranch, and professional categories. These are the manufacturer’s categories, not a third-party performance ranking. Its guide describes homeowner saws for lighter, occasional work such as pruning, small firewood jobs, and storm cleanup; Farm & Ranch saws for regular demanding work on larger properties; and professional saws for professional applications. The guide includes both gas and battery models. See STIHL’s chainsaw buying guide.

Homeowner saws

If chainsaw work is occasional and limited in scope, a homeowner category may be a sensible starting point. Check the specific model’s manual and current specifications against the material and tasks you expect to cut.

Farm & Ranch saws

For recurring firewood cutting, storm debris, and general maintenance across a larger property, this category is relevant to compare. Category placement alone does not establish a saw’s cutting capacity, power, or suitability for a particular job.

Professional saws

These are categorized for professional applications. A homeowner should compare a particular model’s specifications, handling, maintenance needs, and intended use rather than assuming a professional label makes it the right choice.

How should you match a chainsaw to your property?

Start with the jobs you do most often, then compare models against the demands of those jobs and your ability to operate the saw safely.

  • Handling: Compare model-specific weight, balance, starting method, noise, and vibration. These affect fatigue and control, but values must come from current product information.
  • Power and logistics: For a gas model, confirm its specified fuel and oil requirements; for a battery model, check compatible battery and charger needs. Do not assume one power source is universally better for a property.
  • Service and supplies: Check access to compatible chains, maintenance supplies, parts, and local service before purchase.
  • Current cost and availability: Check current listings and local stock; prices and inventory can change.

Is the STIHL MS 271 FARM BOSS a good candidate?

STIHL’s buyer guide lists the MS 271 FARM BOSS under Farm & Ranch. The same guide describes that category for regular demanding work on larger properties, including firewood cutting, storm cleanup, and general property maintenance. That makes the model relevant to compare for those tasks; it does not establish a universal winner or an independent advantage over other brands.

The available information here does not verify current displacement, weight, power, bar length, emissions, warranty, price, or compatibility. Consult the current product listing and instruction manual before comparing those details or buying. No hands-on test is represented.

What size chainsaw do you need for firewood?

There is no verified bar-length or engine-size recommendation that fits every firewood job. The right model depends on the wood’s diameter and condition, the cut being made, how often and how long you work, and the operator’s experience. Check the saw’s current manual for its intended use and limits; do not infer cutting capacity from a product category or model name.

Should you choose a gas or battery chainsaw?

The available buying guide includes both gas and battery saws but does not establish that one power source performs better for homesteading. Compare the exact model’s specifications and account for its operating supplies: gas models require the fuel and oil specified by the manufacturer, while battery models require a compatible battery and charger. Consider your work pattern and the practicalities of keeping the required supplies ready.

What safety gear and practices matter?

Chainsaw safety is part of choosing and owning a saw, not an optional extra. OSHA identifies head, eye or face, hearing, hand, foot, and leg protection as relevant PPE, and emphasizes training, safe work practices, and equipment in good condition. OSHA’s chainsaw Quick Card and OSHA’s chainsaw fact sheet provide safety guidance.

Before starting

  • Inspect controls, chain tension, bolts, handles, and safety devices; do not operate damaged equipment or a saw with disabled safety features.
  • Keep the chain sharp and properly lubricated. Check the oil supply as directed for the saw.
  • Start on the ground or another firm support with the chain brake engaged, following the model’s manual. Fuel gas saws away from ignition sources.
  • Wear suitable head, eye or face, hearing, hand, foot, and leg protection.

While working

  • Maintain secure footing and a firm two-handed grip. Keep the work area clear, check for metal in the material, and watch for limbs or wood under tension.
  • Avoid cutting with the bar tip, which can cause kickback. Do not make overhead cuts.
  • Identify overhead hazards and electrical lines. Plan where material will fall and a retreat route when felling; avoid working alone.
  • Stay within your skill level. Steep or unstable ground, heavy lean, rot, splitting, storm damage, and work above shoulder height can increase risk. Get qualified help or training rather than treating a buying guide as instruction for high-risk work.
  • Engage the chain brake or stop the saw when carrying it over distance or across hazardous terrain, as OSHA advises.

What supplies and upkeep should you plan for?

Follow the chosen saw’s manual for maintenance intervals, compatible parts, and operating supplies. STIHL identifies filing tools—including round and flat files and depth gauges—a stump vise, a scrench, and bar-and-chain oil among common maintenance items. Gas models also require the specified fuel and two-cycle oil or the manufacturer’s premix; battery models require a compatible battery and charger. Confirm fit and specifications for the exact saw rather than assuming a generic part will work. STIHL’s chainsaw maintenance guide covers these supplies.
