Measure the surface and choose the right seat height
Measure from the floor to the underside of the counter or table, rather than relying on a room description or a product name. Ashley recommends this approach and gives the following seat-height ranges for its stool categories. The measurements below are retailer guidance, accessed in 2026.

Check width and usable seating space
Measure the length of the counter or table available for seating. Then check each chair’s widest point—not just the width of its seat—including arms, the back and any flared base. There is no universal spacing-per-seat figure established by the cited guidance. Compare the actual chair dimensions with your available run and leave enough room for people to sit and move comfortably rather than treating a generic capacity estimate as a guarantee.
Choose a profile that suits the room and its circulation
Backs and arms change both a stool’s footprint and how visually substantial it appears. Compare the full profile with nearby furniture and the paths people use around the dining area. A compact or backless design may keep the counter looking open; a taller back or arms may create a more defined seat. Neither option is universally best, so consider dimensions and the room’s layout together.
