A lightweight cotton quilt, a loftier tufted option, and an ultrasonic-welded microfiber coverlet are different kinds of bedding. Use the examples below as a starting point, then confirm current dimensions, care instructions, availability, and price on the product page.
How to choose a quilt for your bed
Start with the job the bed cover needs to do. A lightweight layer can work on its own in warm weather or sit over blankets in cooler months. A heavier or loftier quilt may feel more suitable in a cool room, though personal comfort also depends on the sleeper and the rest of the bedding.
Match the material to the feel you want
Cotton and linen are natural-fiber choices, while microfiber and lyocell offer different surface feels. Velvet, sateen, and jersey also have distinct textures. These are preferences rather than a universal ranking: consider the actual cover and fill materials listed for the item, not just a broad label such as “soft.”
Check construction, not just the name
Traditional quilts have layers joined by stitching; other bed covers may be tufted, layered, or joined by a different method. Construction affects the look and may matter if you are concerned about threads catching or snagging. For example, the Mellanni item discussed in Good Housekeeping’s February 2023 roundup is an ultrasonic-welded microfiber coverlet, not a traditionally stitched quilt.

Choose dimensions by measurement
“Queen” or “King” does not guarantee a particular finished size across brands. Compare the listed width and length with your mattress and decide how far you want the cover to hang at the sides and foot. If you want more overhang, a larger listed size may suit you better, provided it fits the bed and your layering setup.
Plan for washing and drying
Care instructions vary: some options are machine washable, some call for a gentle cycle, and others may require dry cleaning. Loft and material can also affect drying time. Read the current care label before buying and follow it when washing; do not assume one quilt’s instructions apply to another.

What the 2023 testing can—and cannot—tell you
Good Housekeeping reported that its Textiles Lab assessed over 30 blankets, including quilts and coverlets, and collected over a hundred data points specific to quilts. Its described evaluation included comfort, feel, temperature regulation, softness, washability, appearance, and drape, combining lab work with consumer-tester feedback. Those figures describe the review’s reported process; they do not establish that every product remains available or unchanged today.
