The best air purifier for a room where indoor smoking occurs is a mechanical cleaner sized to the room by its tobacco-smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR), with a high-efficiency particle filter and, if odor or gas removal is a goal, a substantial activated-carbon or other gas-targeted filter. No purifier makes indoor smoking harmless or removes every pollutant; reducing or avoiding indoor smoking is the more important step.
What to look for in an air purifier for smoke
Particle filtration: compare tobacco-smoke CADR
Smoke contains airborne particles that mechanical filters, including HEPA and other pleated filters, can capture. Compare a purifier’s tobacco-smoke CADR with the size of the room it will serve. CADR indicates particle-cleaning capacity; it is not a measure of gas or odor removal. A higher tobacco-smoke CADR means more particle-cleaning capacity.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) recommends a tobacco-smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of the room area in square feet when creating a cleaner-air room. This is a practical sizing threshold, not a promise that smoke will be completely removed. EPA’s estimates below assume 8-foot ceilings.
| Room area | EPA estimated minimum tobacco-smoke CADR |
|---|---|
| 100 sq ft | 65 cfm |
| 200 sq ft | 130 cfm |
| 300 sq ft | 195 cfm |
| 400 sq ft | 260 cfm |
| 500 sq ft | 325 cfm |
| 600 sq ft | 390 cfm |
Source: EPA, Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home; estimates for rooms with 8-foot ceilings. For a higher ceiling, an open-plan space, or a room connected to other areas, use the full air volume the cleaner is expected to serve when choosing capacity. A larger unit or more than one cleaner may be needed.

Odor and gas filtration: check for sorbent media
Particle filters alone do not remove gases. If reducing some smoke-related gases or odors matters, look for activated carbon or another filter specifically designed for gases. The amount of filter media matters: a thin carbon layer may have limited capacity compared with a filter containing a substantial amount. There is no widely used rating system that lets buyers compare gas-removal performance as directly as CADR compares particle cleaning.
How to choose a cleaner that fits the room and home
- Measure the area served. Include the full open area when rooms connect, rather than sizing only for the footprint near the purifier. Consider ceiling height as well as floor area.
- Check the tobacco-smoke CADR and rated room size. Use the smoke-specific CADR for particle performance, and treat the manufacturer’s room-size claim as a separate fit check.
- Inspect the filter design. Look for mechanical particle filtration and, for odor or gas goals, clearly specified gas-sorbent media such as activated carbon. A CADR does not establish odor performance.
- Check ozone-related information. EPA advises choosing CARB-certified cleaners in its cleaner-air-room guidance. Avoid ozone generators for occupied spaces; some other technologies can also produce ozone or harmful by-products.
- Check what it will take to keep the unit running. Compare noise at the fan speeds you can realistically use, replacement-filter availability and cost, energy use, and the maker’s replacement instructions. These vary by model and are not established by the EPA guidance cited here.
EPA does not certify or recommend specific portable-cleaner brands or models. The available guidance supports choosing by performance and design criteria, but does not establish a current product ranking, price comparison, or model-by-model noise or operating-cost comparison.

Set up and operate the purifier effectively
- Place it in the room or zone where cleaning is needed. Size the device for the full area and air volume it serves, especially in open-plan layouts.
- Run it at a useful fan speed for as much of the relevant period as practical. Higher speeds and longer run times generally filter more air, but noise and operating cost can affect whether a setting is sustainable. EPA’s cleaner-air-room advice recommends continuous operation at the highest setting.
- Maintain the filters. Follow the manufacturer’s replacement directions. A dirty or overloaded filter can undermine performance.
- Check the central HVAC system before upgrading its filter. EPA advises considering MERV 13 or higher only if the system can accommodate it. Check the system specifications or consult an HVAC professional; a filter that the system cannot handle is not an appropriate upgrade.
- Reduce smoke at its source. Air cleaning is one layer of exposure reduction, not a substitute for avoiding indoor smoke.
If a commercial purifier is unavailable or unaffordable, EPA describes DIY filtration as an option. Performance depends on the design and quality of the components; not every box-fan and filter combination performs alike.
Which air-cleaning technologies to avoid for smoke
Mechanical filters are the clearest fit for airborne smoke particles. Be cautious about devices that rely on ionization, ozone generation, photocatalytic oxidation, hydroxyl generation, or UV components as their smoke-removal method:

- Ozone generators: EPA says ozone generators sold as air cleaners are not approved by any federal agency for use in occupied spaces. At concentrations within public-health standards, ozone has little potential to remove indoor contaminants.
- Ion generators: They can remove some small particles but do not remove gases or odors, and may generate ozone, a lung irritant.
- Other electronic or reactive technologies: EPA cautions that electronic cleaners may be unsuitable for smoke removal when effectiveness is uncertain and ozone may be produced. It also advises against photocatalytic oxidation, hydroxyl generators, and UV-component devices for smoke removal because they are not designed to remove particles and may produce harmful pollutants.
What an air purifier cannot do
A purifier can reduce some airborne particles, and a suitable gas sorbent may address some gases and odors. It cannot eliminate all pollutants or make smoking indoors safe. EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home states: “No air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.” Avoid claims that a device removes all smoke or every toxin, and do not treat CADR as proof of gas or odor removal.
