Consumer air purifiers are designed for indoor rooms, not for cleaning the open air across a patio or yard. The EPA guidance available for this topic does not establish that portable units can purify unrestricted outdoor spaces. If your goal is to reduce smoke or particles indoors, choose a correctly sized room cleaner or use compatible HVAC filtration instead.
Can an air purifier work outside?
EPA describes portable air cleaners as devices for a single indoor room or area, while HVAC filters serve a home’s air system. That guidance does not establish that a consumer purifier can clean the air across an open patio, yard, or other unrestricted outdoor space. An indoor unit may move and filter air near itself, but that is not evidence of whole-patio or whole-yard protection.
For outdoor gatherings, do not treat an indoor purifier placed outside as a substitute for checking air-quality alerts or moving activities indoors when smoke or pollution is unhealthy. For indoor smoke protection, filtration can be useful when the equipment is sized and used appropriately.
How to choose an indoor cleaner for smoke and particles
Match smoke CADR to the room
For a portable cleaner, EPA advises selecting a clean air delivery rate (CADR) appropriate to the room. Its wildfire guidance gives a practical sizing rule: choose a smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. This is EPA selection guidance, not a measured guarantee of health protection. Higher fan speeds and longer operating times generally filter more air, but a noisy setting may be less likely to stay on.

Prefer mechanical filtration and avoid ozone
Mechanical filters, including HEPA and other pleated filters, capture particles. EPA warns that some electronic and other air-cleaning technologies may emit ozone or other harmful pollutants; ozone is a lung irritant. Avoid ozone generators, and use California Air Resources Board (CARB)-certified air cleaners as a way to identify devices that produce little or no ozone. Certification is not a claim that a unit cleans outdoor air or removes every pollutant.
Separate particle removal from gas and odor removal
CADR rates particle delivery; it is not a general rating for removing gases. If gas or odor filtration is a specific need, look for activated carbon or another medium designed for gases. EPA notes that there is no widely used performance rating system for portable gas-removal filters, so a HEPA label or particle CADR alone does not establish gas-removal performance.

When HVAC filtration may make more sense
If your home has a forced-air HVAC system, EPA wildfire guidance recommends a MERV 13 or higher filter when the system can accommodate it. Compatibility depends on the equipment, and the filter must fit correctly. Check the system manual or ask an HVAC professional before selecting a higher-efficiency filter; do not force an incompatible filter into the slot. A correctly fitted compatible filter can treat air circulated through the system, rather than just the air in one room.
DIY box-fan filters: a temporary indoor option
When a commercial room cleaner is unavailable or unaffordable, EPA describes DIY air cleaners made by attaching a furnace filter to a box fan with tape, brackets, or a bungee cord. EPA reports that studies indicate well-built DIY cleaners can be comparable to commercial cleaners for reducing airborne particles, but results vary with design, materials, and assembly. EPA does not recommend routine use as a permanent replacement for products with known performance, and cautions against older box fans manufactured before 2012. This is an indoor smoke option, not outdoor air-cleaning equipment.

What no air cleaner can do
EPA says no air cleaner or filter removes all pollutants. Filters also need regular replacement; a dirty or overloaded filter works less well. Follow the product’s maintenance instructions, and do not assume that a single device removes particles, gases, and every other contaminant. EPA’s home air-cleaner guide also says the agency does not certify or recommend particular brands, so compare individual models using their stated room coverage, smoke CADR, filter type, ozone information, noise, and replacement-filter details.

How do I protect myself from wildfire smoke?
When outdoor smoke is unhealthy, reduce exposure by moving activities indoors and use a properly sized indoor cleaner or compatible HVAC filtration. Check local air-quality guidance for current conditions.
