For a child’s bedroom, choose a portable air purifier with a particle CADR suited to the room’s floor area, filters that address the pollutants you care about, and a fan setting your family can tolerate overnight. Avoid units designed to produce ozone, and plan for replacement filters. A purifier can reduce some airborne particles, but it supplements—not replaces—source control and ventilation.
Start with room size and CADR
A portable air cleaner serves one room. Measure the bedroom’s length and width, multiply them to get square footage, and compare the result with the cleaner’s CADR and stated coverage. For an open layout, account for the full area the unit is expected to serve. EPA’s approximate sizing chart assumes an 8-foot ceiling; rooms with higher ceilings may need greater capacity.

These are EPA estimates for an 8-foot ceiling, not guarantees of performance in a particular home. CADR measures the volume of filtered air delivered for particles; a higher rating generally means faster particle removal under the test conditions. EPA’s technical summary says AHAM-Verified room-size ratings are intended to represent an 80% reduction in particle levels at equilibrium compared with operating without the cleaner. That is a rating basis, not a promise of an 80% reduction in your child’s room. See the EPA Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home and its technical summary.
For wildfire smoke, use the context-specific guidance
For a cleaner room during wildfire smoke, EPA gives a rule of thumb of a tobacco-smoke CADR at least two-thirds of the room’s area in square feet. This is guidance for that smoke-event context; it is not a universal substitute for comparing CADR and product coverage for ordinary use. See EPA’s cleaner-air-room guidance.

Compare ratings on a like-for-like basis
Do not assume that maximum coverage claims from different manufacturers are directly comparable unless the underlying test basis is the same. Check the stated CADR, room-size rating, and the conditions or standard behind the claim. A high tobacco-smoke CADR is a useful indicator for small-particle removal, but it does not tell you how well a unit removes gases or odors.
Match the filter to the pollutant
Particles: look for an appropriate CADR
For airborne particles such as dust, pollen, and smoke, prioritize a suitable CADR and a mechanical particle filter. A HEPA filter can capture particles, but the cleaner still needs enough airflow and capacity for the room. A filter label alone does not establish that the complete unit is appropriately sized.
Gases and odors: check the absorbent media
CADR does not rate gas removal. If odors or gaseous pollutants are a particular concern, look for activated carbon or another absorbent filter and verify that the product identifies its intended use. EPA notes that carbon effectiveness depends on having a large amount of material. It also says research has not shown plasma, photocatalytic oxidation, or UV technologies to remove gases effectively in residential portable cleaners.

Check ozone emissions before buying
Avoid portable cleaners designed to intentionally produce ozone: EPA identifies ozone as a lung irritant. Some electrostatic precipitators, ionizers, UV lights without adequate lamp coatings, and plasma devices may also have ozone-emission potential. EPA says CARB and AHAM maintain lists of units tested and shown to emit little or no ozone. Check the specific model in current listings; low-ozone screening is not an endorsement of overall cleaning effectiveness.

Choose a setting the family can live with
Higher fan speeds and longer operating times generally filter more air, but a noisy unit may be switched off. Compare noise ratings by fan speed, not just the quietest advertised mode, and decide which setting is practical while the child sleeps. EPA gives about 50 dB as a rough comparison to a modern refrigerator’s operating noise. Product-specific sound levels and the room’s acoustics matter; do not assume a purifier is silent.

Consider the controls, display lights, footprint, and whether the purifier can run continuously or on a schedule that suits the household. Those details affect whether it stays in use, but they do not replace checking its CADR at the setting you expect to use.
Place it where it can clean the air
Put the unit in the room where the child spends time. A bedroom can be a good location, and EPA’s technical summary recommends directing clean air toward the breathing zone. Keep the air intake and outlet clear of curtains, bedding, walls, and furniture according to the manufacturer’s placement instructions; blocked airflow can interfere with operation.
Plan for filter replacement and upkeep
All filters need regular replacement. A dirty or overloaded filter does not work well, so check the manufacturer’s schedule and the exact replacement-filter model before buying the purifier. Confirm that compatible filters are available and account for their ongoing cost. A low upfront price is less useful if suitable replacement filters are difficult to find or maintain.

For central HVAC systems, EPA advises using MERV 13 or the highest-efficiency filter the system can accommodate. HVAC filters only work when the system is operating. Check compatibility with the system manufacturer or an HVAC professional rather than installing a filter that restricts airflow.

Source control and clean outdoor-air ventilation are the most effective starting points for improving indoor air; filtration is a supplement. EPA puts the general share of time people spend indoors at about 90%—a broad background estimate, not a child-specific figure. A purifier may reduce some airborne particles and may modestly improve some health measures for some people, but studies do not consistently find major improvements in every allergy or asthma symptom. It does not treat asthma, eliminate all pollutants, or guarantee protection. EPA’s guidance is direct: “Filtration does not replace the need to control pollutants and ventilate” and “No air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.”
If mold is a concern, a purifier may capture some mold-generated particles or odors, but it will not fix the moisture problem that allows mold to grow. Address leaks, dampness, and the source of excess moisture.

When a DIY cleaner is an option
EPA describes DIY air cleaners as a possible alternative when commercial units are unavailable or unaffordable, while preferring a commercial cleaner with a known CADR when one is available because DIY CADR is typically unknown. EPA says designs using more filters, thicker filters, and a cardboard shroud tend to be more cost-effective, though design tradeoffs vary.
For DIY construction, EPA advises newer fans made since 2012 that are UL- or ETL-listed, paired with MERV 13-or-higher filters. It warns against leaving an older fan unattended while away or sleeping. In a child’s room, consider noise, secure assembly, electrical safety, and adult supervision; a DIY unit is not automatically a suitable overnight choice.
