For an established air shop, the Ingersoll Rand 2850MAX-6 is a lighter listed extended-anvil option than the 285B-6; the Chicago Pneumatic CP7782-6 is a tire-service-oriented pneumatic choice. For work away from a compressor, consider Milwaukee’s M18 FUEL 2869-20 or Ingersoll Rand’s W9491/W9691 cordless line. The specifications below are manufacturer-published figures accessed October 8, 2026, not independent head-to-head test results.
How to choose a 1-inch impact wrench
A 1-inch drive is intended for demanding fastening and removal work. Start by deciding whether the job site can reliably supply compressed air or whether cordless mobility is more valuable. Then check reach, socket retention, weight, and the exact operating requirements of the model.
- Power source: Pneumatic models depend on a suitable air system; cordless models depend on compatible batteries and charging availability.
- Anvil reach: A 6-inch extended anvil can reach recessed fasteners, but is unnecessary if a standard anvil gives adequate access.
- Retention and socket fit: Verify the exact retaining style and use a compatible 1-inch-drive impact socket sized for the fastener.
- Handling: Compare published weight and handle layout for the way the tool will be used repeatedly.
- Task: Removal torque and controlled tightening are different needs. A torque-limited-forward model can help with powered tightening, but does not replace the equipment maker’s final-torque procedure.
Manufacturer torque labels—including “nut-busting,” “fastening,” “forward,” and “maximum reverse”—do not establish a common test protocol. Treat them as specifications for screening candidates, not as directly comparable proof of which wrench will perform best on a particular fastener.
Recommended models by work setting
For a shop with a suitable air system: Ingersoll Rand 2850MAX-6
The 2850MAX-6 is a pneumatic 1-inch wrench with a 6-inch anvil. Ingersoll Rand lists 2,000 ft-lb maximum forward torque, 2,100 ft-lb maximum reverse torque, 770 blows per minute, 5,500 rpm, and a tool weight of 21.58 lb. Air supply, sockets, and job setup
Match the compressor and hose to the exact wrench
A pneumatic wrench can only work as intended when the air system meets the model’s pressure, hose, and consumption requirements. For the 285B-6, Ingersoll Rand specifies 90 psi and a 3/4-inch minimum hose, and lists average and loaded consumption separately. Average consumption should not be mistaken for the air demand under load. Check the selected model’s official requirements and whether the shop can sustain the needed delivery at the tool; do not assume another 1-inch wrench uses the same setup. The 2850MAX-6’s listed average and loaded consumption are 14 cfm and 56 cfm, respectively.
Use the correct impact socket and retainer
Choose a 1-inch-drive impact socket with the correct size and fit for the fastener, and verify that its retention arrangement matches the wrench. Chicago Pneumatic lists the SS8210HDW 1-inch, 10-piece heavy-duty wheel-service socket set alongside the CP7782 family. Confirm the individual socket sizes and fastener compatibility before selecting it. Chicago Pneumatic SS8210HDW socket set.
Quick Recap
Which one should you choose?
- Choose a pneumatic model if the work area has an air system that meets the specific wrench’s requirements and the tool will be used where that infrastructure is available.
- Choose a cordless model if mobility and working without an air line matter more, after confirming the exact battery platform and kit contents.
- Choose a 6-inch anvil when the fastener’s recess or clearance calls for the added reach; otherwise compare standard-anvil variants and retention needs.
- Choose the CP7782TL-6 only when its forward torque limit fits the task, and still follow the equipment maker’s final-torque procedure.
