There is no universally best 3.5-ton air conditioner: the right choice depends on the home’s cooling load, the matched indoor and outdoor equipment, and the quality of installation. A 3.5-ton rating is nominally 42,000 Btu/h, but that figure alone does not establish a system’s actual capacity in a particular configuration or how large a home it can cool.
What does 3.5 tons mean?
In HVAC, a ton is a unit of cooling capacity—not the equipment’s weight. A nominal 3.5-ton system corresponds to 42,000 Btu per hour (Btu/h). Product specifications support that category: Rheem lists 42,000 Btu/h nominal capacity for the WA13NY and WA14AZ examples below, and Carrier Enterprise lists 42,000 Btu/h rated cooling capacity for its PH5SAN54200A.
The nominal label is a starting point, not a guarantee of the capacity or efficiency of every installed system using that outdoor unit. Confirm the actual rated capacity for the exact indoor-and-outdoor model combination in the DOE central air conditioner and heat pump database.
3.5-ton models to use as comparison examples
These models illustrate different specifications and system types. They are not independently tested or ranked, so the figures should not be read as proof that one will perform better in a particular home.

- INDIVIDUAL OUTDOOR A/C COMPONENT — Includes ONE air-conditioner condenser only; required indoor coil/air handler or furnace, thermostat, lineset and accessories are not included.
- R-32 AIR CONDITIONER — 3.5-ton nominal outdoor cooling unit; Goodman publishes family efficiency of North-region 13.4 SEER2 class.
- MATCHED-SYSTEM RATING — SEER2 and cooling performance are determined by the complete AHRI-rated system; confirm the approved indoor/outdoor match before purchase.
- REPLACES LEGACY MODEL GSXN3N4210 — Replacement model is based on Goodman's official A2L/R-32 family transition and corresponding capacity/configuration nomenclature. A licensed HVAC professional should confirm the exact application, match and installation requirements before ordering.
- REGIONAL EFFICIENCY NOTICE — North-region 13.4 SEER2 split A/C classification. Goodman states North-region units may be installed only in the U.S. North, U.S. territories and Puerto Rico and are prohibited from installation in the U.S. Southeast and Southwest. Verify destination and AHRI match before purchase.
| Example | Type and nominal capacity | Published efficiency or refrigerant | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rheem WA13NY42AD1NA | Air conditioner; 42,000 Btu/h nominal | 13.4 SEER2; 9 EER2 | Rheem product page |
| Rheem WA14AZ42AJ1NA | Air conditioner; 42,000 Btu/h nominal | 15.2 SEER2; 12 EER2 | Rheem product page |
| Carrier PH5SAN54200A | Heat-pump condensing unit; 3.5 ton and 42,000 Btu/h rated cooling capacity | Uses R-454B; efficiency rating not stated in the cited distributor listing | Carrier Enterprise product listing |
The Carrier is a heat pump that provides cooling and can also provide heating; it is not an AC-only comparison. The listed SEER2 and EER2 values for the Rheem models are manufacturer specifications, not independent test results. These listings do not establish noise, reliability, lifetime operating cost, installed price, or comparative performance under your home’s conditions.
How to compare complete system quotes
Compare the proposed system as a whole, not just the outdoor-unit model name. Ask each contractor to identify the precise equipment combination and explain the basis for the selected capacity.

- Aluminum fin coil
- Permanently lubricated motor condenser fan
- Closet with Louvered Coil Protection
- Verify the rated combination. Match the proposed outdoor model to its indoor equipment and check the resulting cooling capacity and efficiency in the DOE database. It provides model identifiers, cooling capacity, SEER2, EER2, and indoor-equipment information where applicable. DOE says it updates the database approximately every two weeks. A database listing is not, by itself, DOE’s determination that the model complies with energy conservation standards.
- Compare efficiency on the same rating basis. SEER2 describes seasonal cooling output relative to seasonal electrical energy use; EER2 compares average cooling rate with average electrical energy use. Use the rating for the exact matched equipment combination rather than assuming an outdoor unit’s figure applies to every pairing.
- Identify the system type and refrigerant. Confirm whether the proposal is for an AC-only system or a heat pump that also cools. Check that the proposed indoor components are compatible with the outdoor unit and refrigerant.
- Review installation scope, warranty, and service. Compare what each quote includes, the applicable warranty terms, and access to local service. Warranty terms and local availability were not verified for the examples in this guide, so request current details directly from the contractor or manufacturer.
- Compare installed cost and local operating estimates. Request itemized, comparable installed quotes and ask for energy-cost estimates using your utility rates and expected use. No reliable current installed-price or utility-cost figure is established here, so a savings or payback claim cannot be inferred from the model ratings alone.
What SEER2 and EER2 tell you
ENERGY STAR Version 6.2 defines SEER2 as the total heat removed from conditioned space during the cooling season, measured in Btu, divided by the electrical energy consumed during that season, measured in watt-hours. EER2 is the ratio of average space-cooling rate delivered to average electrical energy consumed, in Btu per watt-hour. See the ENERGY STAR Version 6.2 specification.
SEER2 is a seasonal measure; EER2 expresses a cooling-rate-to-power ratio. Neither number alone tells you the system’s performance in your home, and ratings should be compared on the same basis for the exact proposed match.

Can a 3.5-ton system cool a specific square footage?
Tonnage alone does not establish how many square feet a system can cool. The needed capacity depends on the home and its conditions, so a generic square-footage promise is not supported by the nominal 42,000 Btu/h rating. Ask the contractor for a home-specific cooling-load assessment and an explanation of how it supports the proposed capacity; do not choose a system size from floor area or the model name alone.
