For this guide, “double-door refrigerator” means a French-door model: two doors above a bottom freezer. The phrase can also describe a top-freezer refrigerator in some stores, so confirm the layout before comparing models. If you want the French-door style, RTINGS’ September 3, 2026 guide names four category picks: Café CGE29DP2TS1 for best overall, Bosch 500 Series B36FD52SNS for upper mid-range, GE Profile PGE29BYTFS for mid-range, and Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL for budget. Those are editorial recommendations, not a universal ranking; fit and the features you need should decide your shortlist.

What “double door” means in this guide

A French-door refrigerator has two doors on top and a bottom freezer, a layout that provides wide shelves and separates fresh-food access from the freezer. LG’s U.S. guide uses that definition. Retailers may use “double door” for other configurations, including top-freezer models, so check the product photos and layout description rather than relying on the search term alone. French-door refrigerators are generally larger and more feature-rich than top- or bottom-freezer configurations, according to Consumer Reports’ French-door guide.

Current French-door picks by category

RTINGS updated its recommendations on September 3, 2026. Its picks are useful starting points for different budgets, but they do not establish that one model is right for every kitchen or confirm local stock.

Category Model What the guide emphasizes
Best French-door refrigerator Café CGE29DP2TS1 RTINGS describes it as a 36-inch standard-depth model and reports measurements for temperature uniformity and produce preservation. Its discussion also covers the pull-out drawer, freezer shelving, and service and parts access.
Upper mid-range Bosch 500 Series B36FD52SNS RTINGS highlights temperature consistency and quiet operation, while noting tradeoffs involving dispenser complexity and parts availability.
Mid-range GE Profile PGE29BYTFS Named by RTINGS as its mid-range category pick.
Budget Samsung Bespoke RF30BB6200QL Named by RTINGS as its budget category pick.

RTINGS says it has tested more than 35 refrigerators and assesses measures including temperature uniformity, ice making, produce preservation, parts availability, and actual storage capacity. Read its model-specific findings in RTINGS’ 2026 French-door guide; the reported measurements belong to that publisher’s testing, not personal testing for this article.

Other current guides offer different shortlists

Good Housekeeping’s 2026 refrigerator guide names an LG Smart French Door Refrigerator with Dual Ice Maker as best overall and a GE French Door Refrigerator with Ice Maker as best value. Its Kitchen & Cooking Lab says it has tested more than 50 refrigerators in total, including over 20 since 2019; the guide also says testing of additional models is ongoing, so selections may change.

Consumer Reports’ 2026 overall guide says its ratings span more than 300 models across refrigerator configurations. Its stated criteria include thermostat performance, temperature uniformity, noise, ease of use, energy efficiency, crisper performance, and icemaker performance where applicable. The model counts and methods differ across publishers, so they are not directly comparable sample sizes.

Check kitchen fit before choosing features

A refrigerator that fits the opening may still be difficult to deliver or use if its doors hit a wall or island. Measure the appliance opening and the route into the kitchen before selecting a model.

As broad style ranges, Whirlpool’s comparison chart says its French-door models commonly measure 30–36 inches wide and 69–72 inches tall. LG gives approximate U.S. French-door dimensions of 30–36 inches wide and 69–70 inches high in its product guide. These are ranges, not dimensions for any of the recommended models; use the exact model specification for your opening.

Decide between counter-depth and standard-depth

Counter-depth refrigerators are typically 24–25 inches deep and sit closer to flush with countertops, while standard-depth models are generally 30–36 inches deep and project farther into the room but offer more capacity, according to Whirlpool’s comparison chart. Depth can change the look and circulation space in a kitchen, so compare the installed projection—not just the cabinet depth—before ordering.

Compare storage and convenience by model

Advertised capacity alone does not show whether shelves, bins, and freezer compartments suit how you shop. Compare the actual layout and the space taken by features.

  • Fresh-food organization: Check shelf adjustability, door-bin dimensions, and whether a temperature-controlled or convertible drawer would be useful.
  • Freezer layout: Look at drawer or shelf arrangement and whether it accommodates the foods you freeze most often.
  • Water and ice: Compare interior and exterior dispensers, ice-maker configurations, and measured-fill features if offered. A dispenser or ice system may add convenience while taking up space or complexity.
  • Smart features: Decide whether connectivity or a convertible compartment solves a real need rather than treating feature count as a proxy for value.

These options vary by model. Whirlpool notes that not all French-door refrigerators include dispensers, and LG says door count, adjustable shelves, convertible drawers, and freezer arrangements differ across its models. Consult the chosen model’s product details rather than assuming a feature is standard for the style or brand.

Judge performance, energy use, and service separately

Performance claims are most useful when tied to a named model and a stated evaluation method. RTINGS discusses temperature uniformity, produce preservation, noise, ice making, and parts availability for its tested refrigerators. Consumer Reports identifies temperature control, noise, energy efficiency, ease of use, crisper performance, and icemaker results among its rating axes. Use those criteria to compare the exact models you are considering, rather than assuming a category label answers every practical question.

Energy certification is also model-specific. LG says many of its French-door refrigerators are ENERGY STAR certified, but that does not establish certification for every model or current energy use. Verify the exact model’s current certification and energy label. For long-term ownership considerations, check local service coverage and parts access; RTINGS specifically notes parts-availability tradeoffs for some tested models, including its discussion of the Bosch pick.

A practical shortlist process

  1. Confirm the configuration. Decide whether you mean French-door with a bottom freezer or a top-freezer refrigerator.
  2. Rule out poor fits. Compare exact width, height, depth, door swing, installation clearances, and delivery-route measurements with your kitchen.
  3. Choose the depth style. Decide whether a closer-to-flush counter-depth design or the greater capacity of standard depth better suits the room.
  4. Compare layouts and features. Check fresh-food and freezer organization, water and ice systems, and any drawer or connectivity features you will use.
  5. Compare evidence and ownership needs. Review model-specific performance findings, energy certification, service availability, and current delivered cost before buying.

Confirm current dimensions, specifications, certification, price, installation terms, and availability with the manufacturer and retailer for the exact model. The category recommendations above are a starting shortlist, not a substitute for those checks.
