1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThe best domestic dishwasher is the one that fits your kitchen, handles your household’s usual load, and offers the cycles and operating costs you can live with. Start by confirming installation type and dimensions; then compare capacity, the EnergyGuide label, drying, racks, and noise on exact models. There is no single best choice for every home.
Start with fit and installation
Before comparing features, determine what your kitchen can accommodate. A dishwasher that does not fit the opening or connect to your plumbing and electrical supply is not a practical option, however appealing its specifications may be.
- Built-in: Installed under a counter and connected to the home’s plumbing. Measure the available opening and check the exact model’s installation instructions.
- Portable: A movable unit connected to a sink while in use. Confirm that the faucet and hose connection are compatible and that there is room to move and store the machine.
- Countertop: A smaller option found in current model coverage for space-constrained kitchens. Check its dimensions, water connection, and loading capacity rather than assuming it will suit your dishes.
Allow for door swing, nearby cabinets, and the route for hoses or power connections. Confirm clearance and installation requirements in the manufacturer’s instructions for the specific model. A model’s ENERGY STAR status should also be checked directly; DOE’s procurement guidance says the ENERGY STAR requirements it discusses are limited to standard 30-inch-wide built-in and compact residential dishwashers, so do not assume every portable or countertop unit qualifies. DOE Federal Energy Management Program dishwasher guidance.
Match capacity to the dishes you actually wash
Exterior dimensions do not tell the whole story. Rack geometry determines whether your everyday plates, glasses, pots, and cookware fit without awkward stacking. If possible, compare the rack layout and adjustable parts against the items you use most.

ENERGY STAR defines standard-capacity dishwashers as holding at least eight place settings plus six serving pieces; compact models hold fewer. A compact machine may fit a small kitchen, but its smaller capacity can mean more frequent loads and may use more energy over time than a larger machine. Choose based on the volume and type of dishes your household generates, not just the machine’s footprint. ENERGY STAR dishwasher buying guidance.
Compare energy and water figures carefully
Use the yellow EnergyGuide label to compare similar models and estimate annual operating costs. Its estimate reflects assumed use and energy costs, so treat it as a comparison aid—not a promise about your household’s bill. Compare the same type and capacity where possible, and check the exact model number.

| Capacity category | Maximum annual energy use | Maximum water use per cycle |
|---|---|---|
| Standard | 240 kWh/year | 3.2 gallons/cycle |
| Compact | 155 kWh/year | 2.0 gallons/cycle |
These are certification thresholds, not predictions of cleaning performance, household utility bills, or total ownership cost. For context, the US Department of Energy’s consumer page reports statutory water-use requirements of 6.5 gallons per cycle for standard-size dishwashers and 4.5 gallons per cycle for compact-size machines. Those requirements are not a substitute for checking an individual model’s label. DOE consumer dishwasher guidance.
ENERGY STAR estimates that a standard-size certified dishwasher costs about $50 a year to run and may save about 5,800 gallons over its lifetime. These are program estimates, not guaranteed results; use the candidate model’s EnergyGuide label for a more relevant comparison. The agency also says certified dishwashers average 20% greater energy efficiency and 30% greater water efficiency than standard models, a program-level comparison rather than an expected saving for any one home. ENERGY STAR dishwasher guidance.
Choose cycles and drying options for your routine
A soil-sensing or auto-sensing cycle can adjust a wash to the load. If a model lacks soil sensing, look for multiple cycle options so you can select a cycle suited to the dishes. Lighter or energy-saving cycles may be useful for less-soiled loads; the available names and functions vary by model, so check the manufacturer’s specification sheet.

Drying settings are another trade-off. Heated drying can add energy use; ENERGY STAR recommends considering no-heat drying and using rinse agent to help dishes dry. Compare the available drying approach with your priorities for convenience, energy use, and the types of dishes you wash. A listed feature alone does not establish that a machine will clean or dry better in your home. ENERGY STAR dishwasher buying guidance.

How to assess published “best dishwasher” picks
Rankings are editorial judgments, not universal winners. For example, Tom’s Guide’s February 3, 2026 roundup named the Bosch 500 Series SHP65CM5N its overall choice, the Whirlpool WDP540HAMZ its budget pick, and the Danby DDW631SDB its countertop pick. The article says its selections followed online research and specification comparisons; it does not establish those models as the best fit for every kitchen. Treat the selections as starting points, then verify current manufacturer specifications, model numbers, stock, and price. Tom’s Guide dishwasher roundup.
When comparing any two recommendations, line up installation type, dimensions, capacity, annual energy use, noise, cycle set, drying, rack layout, and total delivered and installed cost. Prefer model-specific specifications and clearly described independent testing over an unexplained “best” label.
Use the dishwasher efficiently after installation
- Run full loads when practical and scrape food off dishes rather than rinsing them first.
- Use rinse agent with no-heat drying if the model supports it and the results suit your dishes.
- Select the cycle that matches the load instead of automatically using the heaviest setting.
ENERGY STAR says replacing handwashing with a new certified dishwasher can cut utility bills by about $220 annually and save $3,300 over its lifetime. That is a program comparison estimate; actual results depend on handwashing habits, local utility costs, and how the dishwasher is used. ENERGY STAR dishwasher savings guidance.
