Then choose passage or privacy function, confirm the door preparation and dimensions, and select the finish. A lever set alone should not be treated as an exterior entry lock.
What hardware works on double doors?
Decide whether both leaves are active before choosing a style. An active leaf has operating hardware that retracts a latch; an inactive leaf may need only a fixed pull. For a French-door pair, a dummy lever can serve as that pull while the other leaf uses a passage or privacy set.
Both leaves open independently
Choose a paired set with operating levers and latches for both leaves. Acorn’s Double Lever Passage Set, model JTABI, is one example: the manufacturer lists two levers, two tubular latches, two round rose backplates, a template and installation instructions. One leaf is inactive
Use an operating passage or privacy set on the active leaf and a dummy lever on the inactive leaf. Emtek explains that its dummy set has no latch, requires no bore hole and is surface-mounted; it functions as a pull and is often paired with passage or privacy hardware on double or French doors. Emtek’s San Carlos Lever documentation lists passage, privacy and dummy functions.

Choose passage, privacy or dummy function
These functions are not interchangeable. Select according to what the room and each door leaf need to do.

Check fit before ordering
Lever sets are not universally interchangeable. Check the product’s own specifications against the door and its existing preparation; a familiar dimension from one brand is not proof that another brand will fit.
- Backset: Measure from the door edge to the center of the bore. Acorn’s example includes latches for 2-3/8- and 2-3/4-inch backsets. Emtek lists a standard 2-3/8-inch backset for the San Carlos Lever and says to specify 2-3/4 inches if required.
- Door thickness: Compare the door’s thickness with the set’s stated range. Acorn specifies 1-3/8 to 1-3/4 inches; Baldwin’s cited example lists 1-3/8- and 1-3/4-inch doors. These are product-specific examples, not universal standards.
- Bore and existing preparation: Confirm whether the hardware requires a bore hole and whether it matches the holes already in the door. Emtek says its dummy set needs no bore hole and is surface-mounted.
- Handing and components: Check left- or right-hand compatibility, and verify whether the package includes the latch, strike, template and instructions you need. Acorn lists left- or right-hand use and includes a template and installation instructions.
If replacing existing hardware, compare the measurements and hole locations with the manufacturer’s template before buying. A mismatch can mean extra preparation or hardware that will not install as intended.

For exterior doors, treat the lock as a separate choice
A passage lever is non-locking, and a dummy lever does not operate a latch. Neither is an exterior security lock. Schlage says passage hardware can be paired with a deadbolt on an exterior door; choose and assess the locking system separately from the lever’s style and operating function. The cited product information does not establish a security rating or forced-entry performance for these lever sets.
Choose the look after function and fit
Once the configuration and compatibility are settled, compare lever shape, rose or backplate design, finish and available coordinating trim. Schlage describes the rose or trim as the decorative back piece and recommends coordinating styles and finishes across the home. Treat these as design considerations, not evidence of security or durability. Acorn’s JTABI, for example, is listed with solid brass construction and a matte black finish; confirm current finishes and availability with the manufacturer before ordering.
