The best way to store a decorative wreath is the one that fits its full diameter and depth without squeezing foliage, bows, or ornaments. Measure the wreath at its widest point, account for raised details, then choose a covered bag, rigid round container, or supported hanging spot based on the storage space you have.
Measure the wreath before choosing storage
Wreaths are bulky and irregular, so their nominal diameter is only a starting point. As Amy Tokos, identified by Martha Stewart as a certified professional organizer and NAPO President-Elect, puts it: “Wreaths are bulky and oddly shaped, and often require a lot of space to keep their shape while in storage.”
- Measure across the widest point of the wreath, including any branches or decorations that extend beyond the base.
- Measure its depth from the back of the frame to the tallest raised detail. Include bows, flowers, ornaments, and picks.
- Compare both measurements with the container’s usable interior dimensions or stated capacity. Allow room for details to sit naturally rather than pressing against the closure.
Bag capacities are examples from individual manufacturers, not a universal sizing standard. Check the specific listing and fit of your wreath before buying.
Choose a storage method that fits your space

Balsam Hill describes its bags as polyester and advises against overcrowding; it suggests separate bags or bins when possible. Its wreath and foliage guidance is especially relevant when wreaths have delicate greenery or attached ornaments. Pottery Barn’s surfaced listing describes a padded polyester wreath bag with a hanger and water-resistant exterior, with 36-, 48-, and 60-inch variants. Check the current product details at Pottery Barn before relying on a particular size or feature.
Rigid boxes and round containers
A hard-sided container is an alternative if you prefer a firm enclosure. Martha Stewart’s wreath storage guide identifies hard plastic wreath boxes as an option, and Balsam Hill discusses hard plastic containers for artificial foliage. These are general storage options, not evidence that one container protects every wreath better than another. Choose a box deep enough that its lid does not press down on bows, foliage, or ornaments.

Hanging storage
A wall hook or rack can keep a wreath accessible when floor and shelf space are limited. Use a support point that holds the wreath securely, and consider whether its location exposes it to dust, accidental knocks, or pressure from stored items. A hanging setup may solve the space problem, but it does not provide the same enclosure as a closed bag or box.
Keep wreaths from being crowded or crushed
- Give each wreath enough room for its foliage and attached decorations; do not force it into a bag or box that is too small.
- Avoid placing heavy items on top of wreaths or stacking them so upper items bear on branches, bows, or ornaments.

Make the choice by storage location
If you have a closet rod or hanging space
Look for a bag with an inner hanger, then verify both the wreath’s dimensions and the clearance available where it will hang. A hanging bag keeps the wreath enclosed, while an uncovered hook or rack leaves it more exposed to dust.
If you have a shelf or closet floor
A rigid round box or a bag that fits the shelf can work. Check the container’s depth as carefully as its diameter, and leave room so the wreath is not compressed by a lid or neighboring items.

If you are storing several wreaths
Compare the capacity of a multi-wreath bag with your actual wreath sizes. Balsam Hill lists one small double bag for two wreaths up to 30 inches each, but that stated capacity does not establish that two unusually deep or heavily decorated wreaths will fit comfortably. Separate containers are a better fit when the wreaths need more room or have fragile attachments.
