Most compact countertop ice makers do not keep stored ice frozen. They make ice and hold it in a basket; insulation alone does not turn that basket into a freezer. If you need ice to stay frozen in the machine, look for manufacturer wording that explicitly confirms refrigerated or freezer storage. One documented example is a countertop ice-and-water dispenser, a larger and different appliance type from a portable ice maker.
Do countertop ice makers keep ice frozen?
Usually, a compact countertop ice maker makes ice into a storage basket but does not actively refrigerate that basket. Some baskets are insulated, but insulation only slows heat transfer; it is not proof that the unit maintains a below-freezing temperature. Newair says unused ice in its AI-250W may melt and drain back to be used for another cycle, despite describing its compartment as insulated (Newair AI-250W product page). Whirlpool similarly explains that its ice bin is not refrigerated and that some melting occurs, with the amount affected by room temperature (Whirlpool ice-bin guidance).
For ice you want to store beyond the machine’s immediate use, plan to transfer it to a freezer unless the manufacturer explicitly states that the storage compartment is actively refrigerated. A removable basket, a cold-feeling surface, or the word “insulated” is not enough to establish freezer storage.
What kind of appliance has a built-in freezer?
A countertop ice-and-water dispenser can combine ice production with actively refrigerated ice storage. Vertex describes its PWC-850 as a dispenser with a dual-evaporator refrigerated compartment that keeps ice frozen (Vertex PWC-850 product page). It is therefore a relevant example for someone seeking frozen storage, but it is not the same product class as a small portable countertop ice maker.

How to choose the right machine for your use
Start with storage, not production
Decide whether you need ice briefly held for serving or kept frozen for later. Check the manual and product specifications for explicit terms such as “refrigerated compartment” or “freezer.” If the description says only “basket” or “insulated,” assume the ice may melt unless the manufacturer confirms otherwise.
Compare production and capacity separately
Daily production describes how much ice a manufacturer says a machine can make over time; storage capacity describes how much it can hold at once. They answer different questions. A high daily-output claim does not mean the machine stores that volume or keeps it frozen. Treat output figures as manufacturer claims unless the manual states test conditions.

Check fit, filling, drainage, and cleaning access
Measure the available counter space and verify required clearances in the model’s manual. Check whether water is poured into a reservoir or supplied through a connection, where meltwater drains, and whether the bin and ice-making parts can be removed for cleaning. Also confirm the current warranty, stock status, and installation requirements for the exact model and region before buying.
Using and cleaning an ice maker safely
Store and handle ice as food
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration treats ice as food and advises using clean, non-breakable utensils such as tongs or an ice scoop, avoiding contact with dirty hands or glasses, and storing ice in clean food-safe containers (FDA food-safety guidance). This consumer guidance is not a certification of any household ice maker.

Follow the specific model’s cleaning instructions
Minerals in water can accumulate as scale. Whirlpool says its cleaning indicator or reduced production can signal cleaning is needed, and notes that hard water may require cleaning as often as every six months for its models (Whirlpool cleaning guidance). That interval is not universal: use your own appliance manual for the cleaner, frequency, and procedure, and do not assume a product approved for one brand is suitable for another.

Does an insulated ice basket count as a freezer?
