It can damage appliance components and create safety hazards, according to Whirlpool; GE also advises against using drain cleaner in the appliance. A clog calls for checking the drain path; a dishwasher-specific cleaner is for routine residue or odor maintenance, not for clearing a blockage.
First, tell a clog from an odor problem
Water remaining in the tub, slow draining, or a recurring drain error points to a drainage problem. A bad smell or film without poor drainage is more likely to call for filter and interior cleaning. These problems can overlap, but cleaner tablets do not replace clearing an obstruction or repairing a failed part.
Some water after a cycle may be normal, and the expected amount depends on the model. Whirlpool says a small amount in the filter area can be normal. GE says 1 to 2 cups of clean water covering the bottom can be normal on models without an Ultra Fine filter. Check the owner’s manual for the expected level on your dishwasher.
How to check a dishwasher that is not draining
- Turn the dishwasher off. Before cleaning internal parts or an air gap, follow the model manual. Take care around sharp debris and edges.
- Clean the filter and inspect the sump. Remove and rinse a removable filter as directed by the manual, then check the sump for food or foreign objects. Reinstall the filter correctly; do not run the appliance with filters removed or improperly seated if the manual prohibits it. See Whirlpool’s drainage guidance and LG’s drainage troubleshooting.
- Check the drain hose and connection. Look for a kinked, crushed, or blocked hose. Check the air gap or sink/disposal connection if your installation has one, and confirm that hose routing follows the installation instructions. Whirlpool and GE describe model- and installation-dependent requirements, including a high loop or air gap.
- If the garbage disposal is new, check its dishwasher inlet. The disposal’s dishwasher inlet knockout plug must be removed for the dishwasher to drain into it. Refer to Whirlpool’s dishwasher installation guidance.
- Stop if basic checks do not resolve it. Persistent standing water, poor drainage, or a recurring error can indicate a pump or another component problem. Arrange model-specific service rather than trying stronger chemicals; see Whirlpool and LG.
What to use for dishwasher smells or residue
For odor or film when drainage is otherwise normal, start with the filter and the areas where food residue collects. Check the owner’s manual before using vinegar or a cleaner, and follow the product label. Whirlpool recommends cleaning the dishwasher approximately every 30 days and says affresh Dishwasher Cleaner can help with filming, spotting, interior cleanliness, and odors (Whirlpool end-of-cycle guidance). LG advises cleaning the filter and spray arms, then using a cup of vinegar or dishwasher cleaner in an empty cycle if slow drainage or odor remains (LG support guidance). Follow your appliance manual and the cleaner’s label; do not combine cleaning products or use a household drain opener inside the machine.
