A portable induction cooktop is a practical countertop burner when you need an extra cooking zone and already have compatible pans. If you want a flame-based option, a portable butane stove is a different type of appliance with its own fuel and safety considerations. The available product information supports comparing these formats, but not naming a tested overall winner or best value.
What counts as a countertop burner?
Countertop burner is a broad term for a portable appliance that adds a cooking surface without installing another built-in range element. The two formats covered here work differently: induction uses a magnetic field to heat compatible cookware, while a butane tabletop stove burns fuel from a canister. They are not interchangeable in cookware requirements or operation.
Portable induction cooktops: an extra zone with a cookware check
Hamilton Beach describes its model 34102 as an additional cooktop for settings such as RVs and small apartments. The manufacturer lists six heat settings and a lock feature. Check your pans before choosing induction
Induction needs cookware with iron in its base. Hamilton Beach suggests placing a small magnet on the bottom of a pan: if it holds, the pan is induction-ready. The company specifies flat-bottom cookware measuring 5 to 10 inches (13–25 cm) in diameter for model 34102. Check the appliance’s current instructions for any additional limits.

Understand how the cooking surface gets hot
The induction coil creates a magnetic field that heats suitable cookware rather than heating the glass directly like a radiant element. The glass can still become hot from heat transferred back from the pan, so do not treat it as cool to the touch during or after cooking.
Portable butane stoves: a separate, fuel-powered choice
A portable butane tabletop stove uses a fuel canister rather than induction-compatible cookware. A 2003 U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission staff report describes a particular single-burner design using a horizontal 8-ounce (227 g) butane canister, regulator, and over-pressure protection. The report’s design description and findings relate to the models, incidents, and test conditions it studied; its incident databases reflected records as of September 2001. For any butane appliance, follow the exact current product manual and applicable safety guidance. Do not infer from an older report that all current models are either safe or unsafe.

A simple buying checklist
- Start with your cookware. If considering induction, test the pans you already own with a magnet and check their bottoms against the selected model’s size and shape requirements.
- Choose the operating format deliberately. Induction depends on compatible cookware; butane depends on fuel and must be used according to its appliance manual and applicable safety guidance.
- Check the exact model’s instructions. Confirm its cookware or canister requirements and operating directions rather than assuming every portable burner follows the same specifications.
- Separate listed features from proof of performance. A manufacturer’s settings and lock feature describe what it says the product includes; they do not establish how it compares with competing burners.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—establish
Hamilton Beach’s product page provides specifications and use guidance for one induction model. The CPSC document is a historical staff report about a particular butane-stove design and records available at the time. Neither source provides a current independent comparison across countertop burners. As a result, there is no substantiated basis here to rank models by price, reliability, cooking speed, or overall value.
