A compact blade suits small carving tasks; a longer edge covers more ground when shaping larger stock. Blade shape, bevel orientation and handle clearance matter just as much as length. The examples below are documented by their makers or retailers; they are not comparative test results.
What does a drawknife do?
A drawknife has a blade between two handles. It removes shavings and shapes wood, from roughing stock to some finish work. Drew Langsner describes drawknives as versatile hand tools in Fine Woodworking. The right size and profile depend on the wood, the amount of material to remove and the shape you want to leave.
What blade length suits the job?
Cutting-edge length is a practical choice based on scale, not a measure of quality. These documented examples illustrate the range:
| Example | Cutting edge | Documented use and details |
|---|---|---|
| Flexcut KN25 | 3 inches | Woodcraft lists a straight, single-bevel drawknife with leather sheath for fan carving, bark skinning and roughing corners. |
| Lee Valley Forged Drawknife | 6 inches | The retailer describes this as a general-purpose option. It lists high-carbon steel hardened to Rc55 and says the blade arrives with a working edge that can be honed as needed. |
| Lee Valley Forged Drawknife | 10 inches | The retailer describes this edge for large-scale shaping such as peeling logs. Its listed overall length is 18 inches. |
The Lee Valley tool is also listed in a 13-inch overall length with a 6-inch edge. Those specifications and edge descriptions are the retailer’s claims, not independent test results. A longer edge can cover a broader area, while a compact tool is easier to place precisely in small carving work; match the tool to the operation rather than assuming one length will do everything.

When is a straight or curved drawknife useful?
Straight blades
A straight blade is a practical starting point for broad shaping and relatively flat or gently shaped surfaces. Documented straight options include the Flexcut KN25, the Hans Karlsson drawknife sold by Country Workshops, and straight draw shaves from Koch Industries. These product descriptions establish available forms and uses, not a tested ranking.
Curved blades and inshaves
A curved blade or inshave is intended for more specialized curved profiles and hollowing operations. Langsner discusses curved inshaves for hollowing; Lie-Nielsen lists curved and straight drawknife variants, and Koch offers straight and curved draw shaves. If the work includes a hollow such as a seat, consider whether the blade’s curve fits the radius and whether the handles clear the surrounding wood.

How does bevel orientation affect the cut?
Bevel arrangement and orientation affect how a drawknife meets the surface, so they should suit the operation and the specific tool. Langsner describes different bevel choices for flat surfaces, hollowing and finer work. Country Workshops says its straight Hans Karlsson drawknife can be used bevel up or bevel down and notes handle clearance in chairmaking and seat carving. Lie-Nielsen says the bends in its handles may be adapted to a preferred bevel-up or bevel-down position.
These examples do not establish one orientation as right for every drawknife. Check the maker’s instructions and consider the surface, desired cut and clearance before choosing how to hold or configure the tool.

What else should you check before buying?
- Fit to the task: Compare the edge length and profile with the stock size and shape you need to produce.
- Bevel and handling: Confirm that the bevel arrangement and handle position support the intended work and provide suitable clearance.
- Edge condition: A listed “working edge” may still need honing for your work. Lee Valley says its forged blade can be honed as needed; Woodcraft lists the Flexcut KN25 as single bevel.
- Storage protection: Choose a guard or sheath that fits the actual blade. Country Workshops lists separate 8-inch and 10-inch guards; Woodcraft lists a leather sheath with the 3-inch Flexcut.
- Instructions and safe practice: Read the maker’s full instructions and follow appropriate woodworking safety practices. Product descriptions and brief summaries are not a complete safety procedure.
Other maker-described options include BeaverCraft drawknives, which the maker presents for carving, woodworking, spoon carving, bushcraft and blank preparation. Treat those descriptions as maker statements, not independent evaluations.
