A dishwasher’s sanitize cycle is a model-specific heated option—not a promise that dishes become germ-free. For the strongest evidence, choose a model whose documentation says its designated cycle is designed or certified to meet NSF/ANSI 184, then confirm the exact model’s operating instructions and compare fit, noise, drying, cycle time, and energy and water use. The available evidence supports explaining how to evaluate the feature, but not naming a tested “best” dishwasher.
What is the sanitize cycle on a dishwasher?
It is a designated cycle or option that uses elevated heat to reduce bacteria on dishes under specified operating conditions. On many models, the feature raises the temperature of the final rinse. Its exact behavior—including temperature, added time, and completion signals—depends on the model, so check the owner’s manual rather than assuming all machines or cycles work alike.
For example, GE says its residential sanitization cycle runs until internal water reaches approximately 150°F and may add up to 60 minutes, depending on incoming water temperature. Whirlpool’s 2024 cycle guide specifies a 155°F final rinse for the models it covers. Those are manufacturer statements for particular products or model groups, not universal dishwasher settings. GE’s dishwasher sanitation guidance and Whirlpool’s 2024 cycle guide describe their respective claims.
Does a dishwasher sanitize dishes?
A model with a documented sanitize option can be designed or certified to meet a stated sanitation performance standard when the cycle completes under the required conditions. “Sanitize” does not mean sterile or germ-free, and a manufacturer’s percentage claim applies to the stated cycle and scope—not necessarily to ordinary cycles or every dishwasher.

Note: ONLY use detergent specially for dishwasher because regular liquid dish soap will cause dishwasher problems.
- Heated Dry : Smart dishwasher ensures the best drying performance. The extra drying function offers a thorough drying performance (except for the Rapid and Self-clean cycle) with no additional towel drying required.
- HI TEMP : The HYGIENE wash cycle maintains the water temperature at 136°F (58°C) max , which can tackle even the heaviest soiled dishes. It is also suitable for cleaning baby bottles and children's dinner sets.
GE says its certified residential dishwashers’ sanitization cycle is certified to reduce 99.999% of bacteria on dishes. Whirlpool’s 2024 guide claims elimination of 99.999% of food-soil bacteria for the Sanitize Rinse option on the models covered by that guide. These are manufacturer claims; the evidence here does not provide independent comparative test results for current models. See GE’s explanation of its residential cycle and the Whirlpool model-specific guide.
What does NSF/ANSI 184 mean?
NSF/ANSI 184 is the residential dishwasher performance standard manufacturers cite when describing a sanitizing-cycle claim. Look for documentation that ties the claim to the exact model and designated cycle or option. A claim about that cycle does not establish that every cycle on the dishwasher meets the same requirement.

Residential certification is not approval for commercial food service. GE says its certified residential dishwashers are not intended for licensed food establishments and do not meet NSF commercial standards. GE’s residential sanitation guidance makes that boundary explicit. ENERGY STAR discusses certified commercial dishwashers separately; commercial equipment and residential models should not be treated as interchangeable. ENERGY STAR’s commercial dishwasher information covers that separate category.
How hot does a dishwasher get on sanitize?
There is no single temperature for every dishwasher. GE gives approximately 150°F as the internal-water target for its described residential sanitization cycle; Whirlpool’s 2024 guide says the final rinse reaches 155°F for the models it covers. Use the temperature and instructions in the manual for the exact model you are considering.

Incoming water temperature and cycle completion matter. GE says an interruption or incoming water that is not hot enough can prevent its cycle from meeting sanitizing conditions; when that happens, its sanitized indicator or message will not appear. Follow the manufacturer’s preparation instructions and check for the completion indicator if the model provides one. GE’s guidance describes these conditions.

One documented example is the GE GDT226SILII. Its manufacturer page identifies a Sanitize option described as NSF Standard 184 certified and says the high-temperature rinse reduces 99.999% of bacteria found on dishes. The page also lists ENERGY STAR qualification and ADA compliance. This verifies a feature example, not a ranking or independent endorsement. - 4 Wash Cycles – Energy Saver, Heavy, Normal, Quick
- Plastic Tall Tub – durable and easy to clean
- Top-Control Built-In – sleek design with hidden controls
- ENERGY STAR Certified – saves energy and water
Because sanitize features and configurations are model-specific and can change, verify the exact SKU in the manufacturer’s product information and owner’s manual. An ENERGY STAR listing can help verify energy qualification, but it does not by itself confirm a sanitize option.
How to compare dishwashers with a sanitize option
Sanitize performance is only one part of choosing a dishwasher. Compare the exact model against your kitchen, household, and operating priorities:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Sanitation documentation: Confirm the NSF/ANSI 184 claim, whether it applies to a cycle or option, how the model signals successful completion, and what the manual requires.
- Fit and capacity: Check standard or compact dimensions against the cabinet opening; compare place settings and rack layout with the dishes you use.
- Energy and water: Compare the model’s EnergyGuide figures and product listing, not just its ENERGY STAR badge. ENERGY STAR’s residential criteria effective July 19, 2023 set maximums of 240 kWh per year and 3.2 gallons per cycle for standard dishwashers, and 155 kWh per year and 2.0 gallons per cycle for compact dishwashers. These are qualification limits, not measures of cleaning quality. ENERGY STAR’s dishwasher criteria and certified residential dishwasher listings provide criteria and product-filtering tools.
- Noise and timing: Compare the rated sound level, ordinary cycle duration, and time added by the sanitize option.
- Cleaning and drying: Look for credible performance evidence, soil-sensing features, and a drying design that fits your needs; a sanitize claim alone does not establish overall cleaning or drying performance.
- Ownership considerations: Check current price, warranty, local availability, and access to service or repairs.
For the actual shortlist, use the manufacturer’s current model documentation alongside ENERGY STAR’s criteria and product listings. The listing verifies energy qualification, not the separate sanitize feature.
