Choose flush bolts for a more discreet, integrated look, surface bolts for a face-mounted retrofit, or an astragal when the meeting gap also needs coverage or sealing. The right choice depends on the door’s preparation, swing, dimensions and use—not on a universal “best” latch.
Start by identifying the active and inactive leaves
In a common double-door arrangement, one leaf is active: it opens and closes using the main latch or lock. The other, inactive leaf is held shut separately, often with a bolt at the top and another at the bottom. This division helps determine which hardware you need. Sun Mountain Door’s guide to securing double doors describes this arrangement.
A bolt for the inactive leaf works with the head jamb and sill or floor. If the opening also needs coverage across the center meeting gap, consider an astragal—a component fitted along one leaf’s meeting edge. Depending on the model, it may cover the gap, help with sealing, or incorporate a locking feature. An astragal is not automatically a replacement for the active leaf’s main lock.

Choose based on the door and the job
For a discreet installation
Consider flush bolts if the door is prepared for them or can be modified appropriately. Because the bolt body is recessed, fit and the required preparation matter; a flush bolt that does not fit the leaf or align with its strikes will not operate correctly.

For a face-mounted retrofit
Consider surface bolts when mounting on the door face is practical and visible hardware is acceptable. Compare the location and finish as well as intended duty. “Surface bolt” describes how the hardware mounts; it does not establish a security rating for the installed door.
For the center meeting gap
Consider an astragal if you need to cover the seam or address light, weather or sound at the meeting edge. Steelcraft/Allegion describes Z astragals as a door option; product function and fit depend on the selected design. Steelcraft / Allegion technical data manual

For example, Pemko specifies its 3495 Series for double inswing doors that are 1-3/4 inches thick, with a center gap over 1/2 inch for surface mounting. Those are requirements for that model, not general specifications for locking astragals. Pemko 3495 Series product details
For tall doors
Sun Mountain recommends an extended flush bolt for its double doors over 7 feet (84 inches) tall. This is the manufacturer’s guidance for its own prehung double-door offerings, not a universal code requirement. Sun Mountain Door’s guide

Check fit and alignment before ordering
Record the door and opening details before choosing a model. Hardware dimensions and installation requirements vary; do not transfer a measurement from one product to another.
- Identify which leaf is active and which is inactive.
- Confirm whether the doors swing in or out.
- Measure door thickness and the center-gap width.
- Check door material and whether the inactive leaf already has a mortise, bolt preparation, astragal or strike locations.
- Determine the bolt throw required to engage the head-jamb and sill strikes.
- Check whether the selected product’s strikes suit the head jamb and sill, and whether their positions can align with the bolt.
- Review the product’s template and installation instructions before drilling or altering the door.

These options address different needs: holding the inactive leaf, covering a meeting gap, or providing an easy catch for an interior opening. The manufacturer guidance cited here does not provide an independent ranking of forced-entry resistance, measured burglary reduction or comparative failure rates for these hardware types. A bolt or astragal alone should not be treated as proof that a double-door installation is secure; assess the complete door, frame, strikes and primary locking arrangement together.
