The best crib sheet is a fitted bottom sheet made for your baby’s exact mattress that stays snugly in place when you pull at the corners. For infant sleep, keep the surface firm, flat and noninclined, with only the fitted sheet—no extra bedding or soft objects.
What kind of sheet is safe for a crib?
Choose a fitted bottom sheet specifically made for crib use. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) advises using a firm, tight-fitting crib mattress and a crib-specific fitted sheet in its crib safety guidance. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends a firm, flat, noninclined sleep surface covered by a fitted sheet, with no other bedding or soft objects, to reduce suffocation, wedging and entrapment risks; see its 2022 evidence review.
A sheet’s fabric or marketing label does not replace these basics. The reviewed CPSC and AAP guidance does not rank cotton, jersey, bamboo-derived textiles, organic labels or other materials for safe sleep.
How do I choose a crib sheet that fits?
- Identify the exact sleep surface. Check the mattress and product labels to determine whether you have a standard crib, mini crib, bassinet or play yard. Dimensions and intended sheet compatibility can differ, so do not assume a standard crib sheet will fit. CPSC discusses mattress compatibility in its crib mattress FAQ.
- Match the sheet to the mattress. Compare the stated compatibility and dimensions on the sheet packaging with the mattress information. If either is unclear, contact the manufacturer rather than relying on a generic “crib sheet” description.
- Check the fit on the mattress. Put the sheet on according to its instructions and pull at each corner. CPSC says the sheet should fit snugly and overlap the mattress so it cannot be dislodged by pulling on a corner; its crib sheet safety alert (Publication 5137) gives this check.
- Consider practical preferences. Once compatibility and secure fit are established, compare fabric feel, laundering instructions and any sourcing or construction claims you care about. Treat these as preferences, not proof of safer sleep.
What should I compare when shopping?

What to leave out of the crib
Use the fitted sheet as the only bedding on the infant sleep surface. Do not add blankets, pillows, plush toys or other soft objects. A soft-sleep product or a sheet marketed as especially soft or cooling does not change the AAP recommendation for a firm, flat, noninclined surface with no extra bedding or soft objects.

When should you replace or stop using a sheet?
Do not use a sheet that does not match the mattress, comes loose when you pull at a corner, or cannot be fitted as intended. If a sheet’s compatibility is uncertain, check with its manufacturer before using it. Recheck the fit after laundering and whenever you change the mattress or sleep product.
