For a standard 24-inch built-in dishwasher under $700, the Whirlpool WDP540HAMZ is a credible model to investigate—not a proven best buy. Whirlpool and The Home Depot each showed it at $459 in 2026 page captures, but delivery, required parts, installation and haul-away can push the project total higher. Check fit and setup costs before comparing sticker prices.
What to check before choosing a dishwasher under $700
For a construction-minded purchase, start with the opening and the work needed to make the appliance installation-ready. A nominal “24-inch” label does not guarantee the machine will fit your cabinet or that your existing connections meet the seller’s requirements.
- Total cost: Add the appliance, delivery, connection kit, installation and haul-away if needed. The reviewed listing identifies preparation requirements but does not establish a universal installation price.
- Fit: Compare the actual appliance dimensions with your measured opening and confirm installation clearances.
- Capacity and layout: Check stated place settings and whether the rack arrangement suits your usual dishes.
- Noise and energy: Compare published noise ratings and current EnergyGuide figures on the same basis.
- Cycles and drying: Match the available options to your typical loads, while distinguishing a manufacturer’s feature description from independent cleaning results.
- Availability: Confirm current price, delivery dates and service coverage for your location.
A full-size candidate: Whirlpool WDP540HAMZ
Whirlpool identifies the WDP540HAMZ as a 24-inch built-in dishwasher. Its product page listed dimensions of 23.875 inches wide, 33.5 inches minimum height and 24.5 inches deep. The Home Depot listing states a minimum rough cabinet opening of 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep and 34.5 inches high. Measure your opening and verify the appliance’s installation clearances rather than relying on nominal size alone. Features and reported specifications
Whirlpool lists Heavy, Normal, Quick Wash, Boost and Extended Soak cycles, along with High Temperature Wash, Heated Dry, Extended Dry and Sani Rinse options, plus a triple filtration system. These are manufacturer-listed features, not independent performance-test results. Whirlpool describes Boost as using more water, time and heat than Normal but less time than Heavy. The company says Sani Rinse is UL-certified to eliminate 99.999% of food-soil bacteria and reach a final rinse above 150°F; that claim applies to the option as described, not to every cycle. Whirlpool’s product page describes these functions.
Tom’s Guide reports 12 place settings, 55 dB and 270 kWh per year for this model. Treat those as reported specifications, and check the current EnergyGuide before estimating electricity costs or comparing energy use with another dishwasher. Check installation readiness and total cost
The Home Depot’s captured delivery-preparation instructions call for a new dishwasher connection kit, a water-supply shutoff within 6 feet and an electrical outlet within 6 feet. Confirm the seller’s current requirements and whether your home meets them before scheduling delivery. The appliance price alone does not establish a ready-to-install total.
- Measure the cabinet opening. Compare its width, depth and height with both the appliance dimensions and the retailer’s stated rough-opening requirements.
- Inspect the connections. Check shutoff and outlet locations against the seller’s preparation instructions; ask a qualified installer if the setup needs work.
- Build the delivered total. Request the current appliance price and itemized delivery, connection-kit, installation and haul-away charges for your address.
- Confirm the order details. Verify the finish and handle, stock, delivery window and local service availability before purchase.
Other formats solve different space and plumbing problems
A 24-inch built-in is not the right comparison for every home. An 18-inch slim built-in may suit a narrower cabinet, while countertop and faucet-connected portable machines can work where a standard built-in location or plumbing arrangement is unavailable. Their capacity and setup differ; confirm the exact model’s place settings, connection requirements and workable counter or faucet arrangement. Tom’s Guide describes countertop machines with six place settings and portable types that can connect to a faucet and drain into a sink, but those category details do not establish a particular alternative as the best model under $700.
