A 2-in-1 can be a practical choice when one room needs both, but it is not automatically as capable as two separately sized appliances. Compare its moisture-removal capacity and particle clean-air delivery rate (CADR) independently, then check that each suits the room and the problem you need to solve.
What a dehumidifier–air purifier combo can—and cannot—do
Dehumidifiers draw moisture from indoor air and collect the water in a tank or send it to a drain. Air purifiers move air through filters to capture particles. A combo appliance puts both functions in one unit, but its dehumidifier rating does not tell you how well it filters particles, and its purifier rating does not tell you how much water it can remove.
Humidity control can help reduce conditions that favor mold, but it does not fix the source of moisture or remove existing mold. The US Environmental Protection Agency recommends indoor relative humidity between 30% and 50% in its Care for Your Air guide; its Mold Course says to keep RH below 60%—ideally between 30% and 50%, if possible. If dampness is caused by a leak, condensation, or water intrusion, address that cause as well as the humidity.
How to judge whether a combo is right for your room
Check moisture capacity against the conditions
Look for the amount of water the unit is rated to remove, usually in liters or pints per day, and check the conditions used for that rating if they are disclosed. The required capacity depends on both room size and moisture conditions, according to ENERGY STAR’s dehumidifier guidance. A damp basement, a room with recurring condensation, and a mildly humid bedroom may have different needs even when their floor areas are similar.

Check particle cleaning separately
For air cleaning, look for a particle CADR and the test standard behind it, along with the filter type. Do not treat a manufacturer’s filtration description as an independent comparison with other products. Coverage claims also need care: a stated purifier coverage area does not establish the area the dehumidifier can manage effectively.
Consider whether one appliance is enough
A combo makes sense when both jobs are needed in the same room and the unit’s published ratings meet both needs. Two dedicated appliances may be a better fit if the room has unusually high moisture loads, demands stronger particle cleaning, or needs coverage beyond what a combo’s separate ratings support. Blueair’s own discussion of combo products identifies possible trade-offs such as lower CADR than dedicated purifiers and lower extraction capacity than standalone dehumidifiers; that is manufacturer commentary, not an independent product test.

These examples show that combo products exist, not that one is a proven overall winner. The available information is manufacturer-published, and model suffixes and availability vary by market. No independent model-by-model comparative test is established by the sources cited here.

Ownership details that affect day-to-day use
- Water handling: Check tank capacity, whether continuous drainage is supported, and whether the appliance stops when its tank is full.
- Filters: Confirm replacement-filter availability, compatibility with the exact model variant, and the stated replacement interval. Philips documentation lists an FY1119 filter with an interval of up to 12 months for a documented DE5205 variant; verify compatibility before buying.
- Cleaning and modes: Review how the unit’s tank, intake, and filters are cleaned, and whether it offers settings that match your use, such as humidity control or purifier operation.
- Noise and energy: Compare the manufacturer’s noise and power information for the operating modes you expect to use. A single appliance may simplify placement, but it still needs to run often enough to address both jobs.
- Local fit: Check regional model suffix, voltage and plug, warranty, service support, and whether replacement parts are sold where you live.
ENERGY STAR says its certified dehumidifiers use 20% less energy than similarly sized conventional units. This is a program-level comparison, not a result for a particular combo model; check a specific model’s certification rather than assuming it qualifies.

If moisture problems affect multiple rooms or are tied to the building’s HVAC system, a portable combo may not be the appropriate scale of solution. Whole-home dehumidification is a different category from a portable room appliance: it is integrated with building systems and requires installation planning. A practical buying checklist
- Measure the room and identify likely moisture sources; fix leaks or water intrusion rather than relying on a dehumidifier alone.
- Choose a suitable moisture-removal capacity for the room and its humidity conditions, using the rating conditions where published.
- Set a separate particle-cleaning target and compare CADR and filter type; do not substitute dehumidification capacity for a purifier rating.
- Compare tank and drainage arrangements, full-tank behavior, filter replacement, cleaning, noise, operating modes, and energy information.
- Verify the exact regional model, current specifications, replacement-filter compatibility, and local service before purchase.
