The best compression tester for a chainsaw is a small-engine tester with an adapter that fits your saw’s spark-plug thread and reaches and seals correctly. No universal retail model or adapter fit is established across chainsaws, so confirm compatibility against your exact model’s service information before buying. A gauge reading is a diagnostic clue—not a stand-alone verdict on engine health.
What is the best compression tester for a chainsaw?
Choose a small-engine compression tester that connects securely at the spark-plug hole and includes an adapter confirmed for your chainsaw. The Husqvarna Construction workshop manual for the K960 describes connecting its specified tester at the plug hole, but neither that manual nor STIHL’s guidance establishes one adapter specification or a universally best retail tester for every chainsaw. There is no substantiated brand ranking or head-to-head accuracy test to use as a basis for naming one best model. Instead, evaluate a kit against the following practical criteria:
- Adapter compatibility: Check the spark-plug thread and required reach for your exact chainsaw model against the tester kit’s specifications. Do not assume an adapter fits because it is advertised for small engines generally.
- Connection and seal: The tester must make a secure connection at the plug hole. A poor seal can undermine the usefulness of the reading.
- Gauge readability and units: A clear scale that includes units you can interpret—such as psi or bar—makes it easier to record results and compare them with the saw’s service guidance. The cited sources do not prescribe a particular retail gauge range.
- Repeatability and construction: These are sensible selection considerations, but the cited sources do not compare brands or validate any specific tester’s performance.
When searching, use terms such as “chainsaw compression tester” or “small-engine compression tester,” then verify the included adapter rather than relying on the product category label.

#1 Best Overall
- Professional Tester Kit: Our engine cylinder compression tester kit helps you measure pressure on gasoline engine cylinder quickly and accurately. Made of choice materials and treated with rust prevention and corrosion prevention, sturty and time-proof
- Compression Gauge: Large acrylic dial and double-scale gauge for more accurate reading of data. Pressure range up to: 300 psi & 20 bar. One-click release pressure before disconnecting to reduces the risk of fuel injection. Comes with scratch resistant coating and rubber protective cover
- Universal Connection: Two universal rubber cone adapters provide quick and easy connections suitable for most spark plug depths, and an extended hose allows you to get into tight Spaces. Connect with the dial using a quick connection coupler, simple and fast
- Complete Accessories: The cylinder compression tester Kit includes: 1 x compression gauge, 2 x rubber cone ends, 4 x Metal adapter, 1 x 14" extension hose and 1 x manual. Four adapter sizes are widely available for most cars, motorcycles, ATVs, boats, snowmobiles, etc
- Note: Most diesel engines do not use engine pressure gauges due to the low pressure range. Please read the manual carefully before using the compression tester kit. We will provide satisfactory solutions for any issues with the product
How do you compression-test a chainsaw?
Follow the procedure in the service manual for your exact saw. Compression-testing steps can depend on the engine design, including whether the saw has a decompression valve and how it must be handled. The older Husqvarna Construction K960 manual offers one model-specific example, not a universal chainsaw procedure.
- Check the saw’s service guidance. Confirm the correct test method and any instructions for a decompression system before starting. The K960 manual’s described procedure says a decompression valve should be closed or sealed.
- Warm the engine as directed. In the K960 manual’s procedure, the engine is warmed before testing.
- Remove the spark plug and connect the tester. The manual places its specified compression tester at the spark-plug hole. Use an adapter confirmed for your saw and ensure the connection is secure.
- Crank the engine as specified. For the K960 procedure, the operator makes 5–6 attempts to start the engine, then reads the pressure. Use your own saw’s service instructions if they differ.
- Release and repeat. The K960 manual calls for releasing pressure at the gauge, repeating the procedure a few times, and averaging the readings.
Those steps and attempt counts describe Husqvarna Construction’s 2007 K960 workshop manual. They should not be substituted for the service procedure for a modern chainsaw or a different model.

- Professional Test Set: Our compression tester kit can help quickly and accurately measure cylinder pressure. The accessories are treated with anti-rust and anti-corrosion processes, sturdy and long-lasting. Compatible with small engine types: automotive, motorcycles, lawn mowers, chainsaws, etc. (Not for diesel engines)
- Compression Gauge: 3 inch large dial with dual scales(0-300PSI / 0-20Bar). Shock-absorbing rubber cover and scratch-resistant coating. Built-in check valve maintains pressure reading. One click pressure release before disconnecting to reduce fuel injection risk
- Easy Operation: One-hand release valve for quick deflation. Quick connect adapters do not require threaded installation. Extended hose reaches tight spaces. Follow the compression test instructions to understand the steps and repeat measurements to ensure data reliability
- Complete Accessories: The small engine compression tester includes: 1 * compression gauge, 1 * 14" hose, 2 * rubber cones(straight/angled), 1 * spark plug tester, 1 * manual and 4 * adapters (M10, M12, M14, M18). Suitable for most spark plug types and depths
- Additional diagnostic function: The spark plug tester is used to quickly diagnose ignition system issues, such as dirty spark plugs, damaged cables, or contact point faults. Connect the tester's black boot to the spark plug and its metal end to the spark plug coil. Then, start the engine; a flash of light indicates a complete ignition circuit
What PSI should a chainsaw have?
There is no single pass/fail PSI figure established for every chainsaw in the cited manufacturer guidance. STIHL’s U.S. Chainsaw FAQ says, “Generally the minimum is 110 lbs. of compression. However, this will vary by model, and compression readings alone are not enough to determine the condition of the engine. Compression gauges are not always accurate, and different engines will provide different results.” STIHL Chainsaw FAQ The FAQ does not state a publication year.
A separate example in Husqvarna Construction’s 2007 K960 workshop manual says a new, run-in engine is approximately 9 bar (130 psi), and that readings below 7 bar (100 psi) indicate cylinder, piston, or piston-ring faults for the equipment covered by that manual. Those values belong to the manual’s covered equipment; they do not replace the service data for a chainsaw.

- Checking Compression On Petrol Engine Quickly And Accurately
- Easy Pressure Release Button On Side Of Tester
- 3" Gauge Features Dual Color Scale for easy reading. Pressure Range: 0-300psi, 0-20bar
- Kits Includes 2 Rubber Cones Ends for quick check. (no need to thread into head)
- Includes 17.7" extension hose with 4 sizes (10mm, 12mm, 14mm, 18mm) selectable adapters, suitable for petrol engines on motorcycles, cars, trucks, ATVs and more
These manufacturer figures come from different contexts, so do not combine them into a universal chainsaw threshold. Compare a result with the exact model’s service guidance and interpret it alongside how the saw runs and any other symptoms.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What does a low or inconsistent reading tell you?
A compression test can help screen for a problem, but a gauge alone cannot confirm the cause or establish the complete condition of the engine. STIHL cautions that compression gauges may be inaccurate and that results differ between engines. A low or inconsistent result is therefore a reason to verify the test setup and consult model-specific service information, not proof of one particular failure.
