The right choice depends on the specific chemical and concentration, any mixture, the task, and conditions such as exposure time, temperature, pressure, and contact with the glove. For construction work, verify a specific glove model against the product’s chemical test data and your workplace hazard assessment; a material label or certification alone is not enough.
Start with the chemical and the task
Identify the exact chemical or product, its concentration and formulation, and how workers may contact it. Review its safety information and consider both local skin effects and the possibility that a substance can pass through skin and cause effects elsewhere in the body. OSHA’s maritime PPE-selection guidance identifies toxic properties and these routes of harm as factors in glove selection. That appendix is non-mandatory guidance for the maritime PPE subpart, not a universal rule for every industry or jurisdiction.
Then describe the work: brief splash or repeated contact, handling containers or equipment, expected exposure duration, and any mechanical hazards. A glove that resists a chemical but prevents safe grip or the required dexterity may not be suitable for the task. Consider cuff coverage and how workers will put on and remove gloves without contaminating their skin.
Compare specific glove models, not just materials
Rubber, plastic, and synthetic rubber-like gloves—including latex, nitrile, butyl, and neoprene—are broad chemical- and liquid-protection categories, not compatibility guarantees. OSHA’s PPE assessment guidance lists these categories, while the NIOSH-hosted chemical protective clothing database disclaimer cautions that its recommendations are only a starting point and that many chemicals lack a recommended hand barrier.
#1 Best Overall
- 【Heavy-Duty Chemical Resistance】High-end nitrile gloves possess excellent chemical resistance, providing a tough barrier against harsh substances such as industrial solvents and cleaners, so you can handle lab work or heavy-duty tasks with confidence.
- 【Balance of Protection and Dexterity】With a thickness of 15 mils, these gloves offer both flexibility and protection. They mold to your hands for all-day wear, offering comfort that makes you forget you're wearing them—whether handling chemicals or doing chores.
- 【Non-Slip Grip】Featuring a diamond-textured palm, these gloves provide a secure grip and prevent slipping during dishwashing or repairs. The ergonomic design allows free movement, so you can tackle tasks without fumbling.
- 【Latex-Free & Odor-Free】ThxToms nitrile gloves are made from latex-free material, helping to prevent skin irritation and allergies. The spray-flocked lining makes them easy to put on and take off, while also minimizing odor from sweat.
- 【Multipurpose】Ideal for a wide range of applications including lab work, dishwashing, hair coloring, tattooing, food preparation, painting, kitchen and household cleaning, pet care, gardening, home improvement, and hobbies such as arts and crafts or mechanical repairs.
For each candidate, obtain product-specific permeation data for the chemical, concentration, and conditions of use. Also check degradation resistance, glove thickness, cuff design, fit, grip, dexterity, and any relevant mechanical protection. If two models are chemically compatible, compare their technical data sheets against the task rather than assuming the model with the longest laboratory breakthrough time is automatically the most practical choice.
Understand breakthrough, permeation, and other failure modes
Permeation is the movement of a chemical through glove material at a molecular level. A breakthrough time is measured under defined test conditions; it is not a guaranteed safe workplace wear interval. Chemical concentration, glove thickness, temperature, humidity, and pressure can affect performance. OSHA’s Technical Manual guidance on PPE says expected use and actual conditions matter, and warmer or pressurized conditions may reduce the protective margin.

- CONFIDENCE- GLOVES THAT HOLD UP TO THE JOB AT HAND: When your protection is on the line, you demand a glove that will hold up. Inspire Gloves give you the confidence to tackle all scenarios securely and safely. 100 gloves by weight per box. Don glove by the cuff for best application.
Permeation is not the only way protection can fail. Degradation can change a glove’s properties, while penetration can occur through holes or other imperfections. Pressure points, reuse, and manufacturing batch variability may also affect performance. Use the manufacturer’s care and replacement instructions and establish a way to inspect gloves before use; do not assume an intact-looking glove is compatible or that a previously used pair remains suitable.
Treat mixtures as a separate compatibility question
A formulated product may not behave like any one of its ingredients. OSHA’s non-mandatory maritime selection guidance says: “For mixtures and formulated products (unless specific test data are available), a glove should be selected on the basis of the chemical component with the shortest breakthrough time, since it is possible for solvents to carry active ingredients through polymeric materials; and,” This is a clause from OSHA’s longer guidance, not a universal guarantee of protection. OSHA’s Technical Manual discussion of chemical hazards also notes that solvent mixtures can have shorter breakthrough times than estimates based on single-component results. Prefer test data for the actual mixture when available.

Use product examples as starting points, not endorsements
These manufacturer-listed products illustrate why a named glove still needs chemical-specific verification:
- Ansell AlphaTec 53-001: Ansell describes this as a multi-layer nitrile/neoprene chemical-resistant glove with a gauntlet cuff, for uses including chemical handling, equipment maintenance, and repair. The product page lists EN ISO 374 certifications. Check the current product documentation for test results relevant to the chemical and local specification.
- Ansell AlphaTec 38-560: Ansell describes this as a butyl-polymer chemical-resistant glove for uses including chemical handling, equipment repair, and maintenance. Its product page also lists EN ISO 374 certifications. Check the model-specific information for permeation results for the actual chemical.
An EN ISO 374 marking is not proof that a glove protects against every chemical. Use the model’s test data and workplace evaluation to establish suitability.

Build glove selection into the workplace PPE process
For construction employers, glove choice should sit within the site’s hazard assessment and PPE program, not rely on a general material chart. OSHA’s PPE assessment guidance provides a broader starting point. The NIOSH-hosted database disclaimer also warns that laboratory data alone cannot guarantee adequate protection under workplace conditions.
- Identify the exposure: record the product, concentration or formulation, task, likely contact route, and expected conditions.
- Review model-specific data: check permeation and breakthrough information, degradation resistance, test conditions, and the manufacturer’s use and replacement directions.
- Check task fit: assess grip, dexterity, cuff coverage, fit, and mechanical hazards alongside chemical compatibility.
- Set use and removal practices: train workers to avoid contaminating skin when removing gloves, inspect gloves as appropriate, and replace them according to the product instructions and site procedures.
- Reassess when conditions change: a different product, concentration, mixture, temperature, pressure, or task can change whether the selected glove is suitable.
The NIOSH-hosted database’s disclaimer says its listed materials are suggested for less than 21% of the organic substances in the Pocket Guide for which preventing skin contact is recommended. That statistic describes the scope of that database and its recommendations; it is not a current universal measure of glove availability or protection.
