The best central air-cleaning option for most homes is a properly fitted HVAC filter rated MERV 13—or the highest MERV rating the system can handle. Check the filter slot, dimensions, and equipment requirements before upgrading: a filter that is too restrictive or does not fit correctly may not be suitable. Central filtration is only one part of improving indoor air; source control and ventilation matter too.
What “central air purifier” means
The phrase can refer to two different things: a replacement filter in a home’s central forced-air heating and cooling system, or a separate air-cleaning device installed in the ductwork. The practical guidance here concerns HVAC filters. The available evidence does not establish a comparative ranking of in-duct purifier models, and the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says it “does not certify or recommend specific brands or models of air filters or portable air cleaners.”
A central HVAC filter treats air that passes through the system as it circulates. It does not clean every room continuously or remove every kind of indoor pollutant. The EPA recommends first reducing or removing pollution sources and ventilating with clean outdoor air when appropriate, using filtration as a supplement. Its 2018 consumer guide estimates that people in the United States spend about 90% of their time indoors, mostly at home.
Which HVAC filter should you choose?
For a forced-air system, EPA guidance is to use a filter rated at least MERV 13 if the system can accommodate it—or the highest rating the system’s fan and filter slot can handle. Compatibility is the deciding condition, not a reason to install the highest-rated filter regardless of the equipment.

What MERV 13’s rating tells you
MERV, or Minimum Efficiency Reporting Value, describes a filter’s ability to capture particles in specified size ranges under test conditions. In the EPA’s MERV rating table, accessed October 2026, MERV 13 has at least 50% average capture efficiency for particles 0.30–1.0 micrometers, 85% for 1.0–3.0 micrometers, and 90% for 3.0–10 micrometers. These category figures describe filter performance in testing; they are not a guarantee that the same share of particles will be removed from all the air in a home. Fit, system runtime, and maintenance affect what filtration the home actually receives.
See the EPA’s explanation of MERV ratings for how the rating categories are defined.

How to check whether your system can use it
- Check the current filter label and the equipment documentation for the required filter dimensions and any stated MERV limit.
- Ask an HVAC professional to assess compatibility if the system’s capacity is unclear. EPA recommends MERV 13 only when the fan and filter slot can handle it.
- Buy the exact size specified for the system. The filter should fit correctly; do not bend or crush it to make it fit.
- If MERV 13 is not suitable, use the highest rating the system can accommodate rather than assuming a higher-rated filter is automatically better for that equipment.
For ducted heat pumps, EPA also discusses fine-particle filtration and system considerations in its guidance on whether ducted air-source heat pumps filter fine particles.
Central HVAC filtration versus a portable air cleaner
| Option | Area served | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| HVAC replacement filter | Air circulated through the central forced-air system | System compatibility, exact dimensions, fit, rating, and how often the system operates |
| Portable air cleaner | A particular room or area | Whether it is sized for the room and suitable for the intended pollutant |
A portable air cleaner can supplement central filtration, including in a room where more particle cleaning is needed or where the HVAC system cannot use a high-efficiency filter. It is not a central purifier: it treats the room or area around it rather than the air circulated through the whole HVAC system. EPA’s clean-room guidance for wildfire conditions describes a room-level approach for that specific situation.

What central filters can—and cannot—do
Particles
A compatible, well-fitted filter can capture some airborne particles as air passes through it. The delivered benefit depends on the system operating, the filter fitting properly, and maintenance. EPA notes that HVAC filtration works only while the system runs: longer runtime can increase filtration, but may also raise electricity use and affect humidity control during cooling.
During wildfire smoke events, follow current local health guidance and use EPA’s wildfire indoor-air-quality guidance. A central filter is one possible part of an indoor-air strategy, not a guarantee that a home is protected from smoke.

Gases and odors
Particle filters are not a general solution for gases or odors. EPA notes that gas filtration does not have widely used consumer performance rating systems, so a MERV rating should not be read as a measure of gas removal. Focus on identifying and reducing the source; ventilation with clean outdoor air can also help when conditions allow.
Mold and moisture
A filter may capture some airborne particles associated with mold, but filtration does not correct the moisture problem that allows mold to grow. Address the water intrusion, dampness, or other moisture source; filtration is not a substitute for that work or for professional remediation where needed.

Ozone
Avoid air cleaners that intentionally generate ozone. EPA identifies ozone as a lung irritant; an air-cleaning device should not be treated as a safe shortcut for removing indoor pollutants.

- Use the specified filter dimensions and ensure it sits properly in the slot.
- Follow the filter and equipment manufacturers’ maintenance instructions; the supplied EPA guidance does not establish one replacement interval for every home and system.
- Remember that an HVAC filter only filters air when the system circulates it. Running the system longer may increase filtration while also increasing electricity use and affecting cooling-season humidity control.
- Reduce pollution at its source and ventilate with clean outdoor air when appropriate. EPA presents these as primary indoor-air measures, with filtration as a supplement.
EPA’s broader Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home, 2nd edition explains the role and limits of filtration alongside other indoor-air measures. Its indoor air filtration guidance also addresses filtration during wildfire-related conditions.
Bottom line
Choose a MERV 13 HVAC filter only when the system can handle it; otherwise, use the highest compatible rating. Confirm dimensions and fit, maintain the filter as directed, and treat filtration as one component of indoor-air management—not a substitute for source control, suitable ventilation, or fixing moisture problems. If central filtration is unsuitable or a particular room needs additional particle cleaning, consider a properly sized portable air cleaner for that room.
