There is no substantiated universal winner among top-load washing machines in the available evidence. Agitator and impeller designs clean through different wash actions, and manufacturer feature descriptions do not prove that one model cleans better than another. To choose well, compare independent cleaning results for the exact models you are considering, then weigh capacity, efficiency, fit and service support.
Agitator or impeller: what is the difference?
A traditional top-load agitator is a post in the center of the wash basket that moves clothes through the water. An impeller is a low-profile plate at the bottom of the basket that moves water and clothing without a tall central post. These designs create different wash actions; neither label alone establishes which washer will remove stains better in a particular test or household.
Some machines let you choose between configurations. Whirlpool’s WTW6157PB, for example, has a removable agitator and is described by the manufacturer as usable with impeller wash action when the agitator is removed. LG’s top-load range includes both agitator and impeller options, while GE describes traditional agitator models and dual-wash action. What the available cleaning evidence can—and cannot—tell you
Consumer Reports’ 2026 summary of its high-efficiency top-load coverage says its lab testing places HE top-load washers below front-loaders but above top-load agitator machines in cleaning effectiveness. The detailed model-level scores and test methodology are not available in that summary, so it cannot support a ranking of individual washers or a conclusion that every HE top-loader will outperform every agitator model. ENERGY STAR certification and a cleaning score are also different kinds of evidence. Under the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2025 ENERGY STAR Most Efficient clothes washer criteria, a washer must meet a minimum average Total Cleaning Score of 85.0 under the referenced test method. That figure is a threshold for that recognition—not a score assigned to every ENERGY STAR-certified washer or a comparative rating for a particular model. How to compare washers for your household
- Look for comparable cleaning tests. Compare exact model numbers, test methods and scores from an independent source. A feature name such as “Super Speed” or a manufacturer’s wash-action description is not a cleaning test.
- Match capacity to the loads you actually wash. Consider bulky items and heavily soiled loads, but do not assume the largest advertised capacity is best. Consumer Reports’ surfaced summary cautions that stuffing a washer full may compromise cleaning; follow the model’s manual and avoid overloading.
- Check efficiency evidence separately. Verify the specific model’s current ENERGY STAR status. Do not treat a Most Efficient threshold as a rating for all certified machines.
- Confirm practical fit and support. Check the washer’s dimensions and required clearances, cycle choices, warranty terms, local service availability and maintenance requirements for the exact model.

These examples show why specifications are useful for narrowing choices but do not establish which washer cleans best. Verify current model availability and specifications in your region before buying.

Choose by combining independent cleaning evidence for the exact model with the features and fit your household needs. If you are deciding between agitator and impeller designs, use the mechanism to narrow your options—not as a substitute for comparable cleaning results. When those results are unavailable, the evidence does not justify naming a “best cleaning” model.
