There is no single best collated finish nail for every project. For sturdy jambs and substantial casing, 15-gauge nails are a useful starting point; 16-gauge nails suit many baseboards and general interior trim; and 18-gauge brads are often a better fit for delicate profiles where a smaller hole matters. These are application guidelines, not load ratings. Choose the fastener by the trim, backing, desired holding potential, nailer specifications, and exposure.
Which gauge fits your project?
Gauge is a tradeoff: 15-gauge finish nails are thicker than 16-gauge nails, while 18-gauge brads are thinner. A larger fastener may provide more holding potential, but it also leaves a larger hole and can split narrow or delicate stock. No numeric holding-strength comparison is established here, so use the following as starting points rather than performance guarantees.
| Project or material | Starting point | Why it may fit | Watch for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sturdy door jambs, substantial casing, large or heavy trim | 15-gauge finish nails | SENCO associates 15 gauge with sturdy jamb installation and large trim. | Larger holes and increased splitting risk in narrow profiles. |
| Base trim, general interior casing, larger trim, some crown | 16-gauge finish nails | SENCO identifies base trim and larger trim as applications; retailer guidance also describes it for typical trim and casing. | Check the actual profile, backing, and nailer requirements. |
| Medium or small casing, chair rail, low-profile crown, delicate returns or small parts | 18-gauge brads | The thinner fastener can reduce visible hole size and damage to delicate profiles. | It offers less substantial holding potential than larger finish nails. |
| Structural framing or sheathing | Use the specified structural fastening system | Structural fastening may be governed by code, plans, or substrate and manufacturer requirements. | Do not substitute finish nails based on this trim-selection guide. |
Glue may be appropriate in some woodworking assemblies, but it does not replace project specifications or required mechanical fastening.
Check the nailer before buying nails
Gauge alone does not establish compatibility. The exact nailer model determines which combinations of gauge, length, collation angle and material, and nail style it accepts. Straight, angled, DA-style, and FN-style products are distinct configurations; matching one attribute does not guarantee that the nail will feed or fasten correctly.

- Identify the exact nailer model. Read its model number, then consult its manual or the specifications on the tool body. Do it Best’s selection guide likewise advises: confirm the specifications in the manufacturer manual or tool label.
- Match the gauge and length. Select a nail within the tool’s stated length range and appropriate for the workpiece. The nail must penetrate the trim and backing as intended without exceeding the tool’s limits.
- Match collation and nail style. Confirm straight or angled collation, angle, material, and any head or style designation specified for the nailer. Do not assume a similar-looking strip is compatible.
- Check material and finish. Match the nail material or coating to the substrate, treatment, moisture, and exposure. An interior bright or coated finish should not be assumed suitable for exterior or damp conditions.
Manufacturer catalogs illustrate why checking the model matters: Milwaukee’s EU catalog lists 15-gauge 34-degree D-head, 16-gauge straight and 20-degree angled, and 18-gauge brad categories; BOSTITCH lists 16-gauge nails and 15-gauge DA-style angled products; Grip-Rite lists 15-gauge DA- and FN-style angled nails, along with straight and angled 16-gauge products. These catalog examples are not a cross-compatibility chart, and configurations can vary by market.
Choose length, finish, and fit for the conditions
Length should suit both the workpiece and the nailer’s specified range; gauge by itself cannot tell you which length to use. Likewise, nail material and coating should be selected for the substrate and exposure. For exterior or damp work, verify suitability for those conditions rather than relying on a product’s general “finish nail” label.

Do not infer cross-brand compatibility from gauge alone. A retailer guide notes that head shape, shank diameter, and collation fit may matter when considering another brand, but the tool manual remains the decisive reference. Manufacturer instructions for the specific nail and nailer should govern the final choice.

For non-structural interior trim, the best choice is the compatible nail that holds the work appropriately while keeping hole size and splitting risk acceptable for the profile. SENCO notes that “Non-structural interior applications such as crown molding, door casings or chair rail offer the most choice in the tools and fasteners you use.” That flexibility does not extend to structural fastening, and it does not eliminate the need to check the nailer.
