The best cheese spreader for entertaining is one with a broad, rounded blade that scoops and spreads soft cheeses cleanly. Choose a comfortable handle, then add a separate cheese knife if your board includes cheeses guests need to cut. A multi-knife set is useful for serving several textures, but is unnecessary if you only need to spread.
What a cheese spreader is—and when to use one
A cheese spreader is a short utensil with a rounded blade, made to scoop and spread soft foods rather than cut wedges. Opinel lists fresh goat cheese, mascarpone, labneh, Boursin, pâté and similar spreads as examples in its guide to choosing a cheese knife.
For creamy cheeses, a rounded blade helps lift and spread the cheese. For semi-soft, firm or hard cheeses that need slicing, use a sharper, sturdier cheese knife instead. That distinction—spreading versus cutting—is more useful than choosing a utensil simply because it is labeled a cheese knife. Christofle’s serving guide describes the different blade roles.
What to look for in a spreader
- Blade shape and width: Look for a broad, rounded blade suited to scooping and spreading. The right shape is the central functional feature for soft cheese.
- Handle comfort and clearance: Choose a handle that feels comfortable to hold and gives your hand room while spreading. If possible, consider how it feels in your grip rather than judging appearance alone.

If you are serving cheeses that need cutting as well as spreading, consider adding the appropriate knife rather than asking one utensil to do every job. Set up the board for guests to serve themselves
