No air purifier can make smoking indoors safe or eliminate secondhand-smoke exposure. The effective solution is to keep smoking out of the home and other enclosed spaces. A correctly sized purifier may reduce some airborne particles, while activated carbon may help remove some gases and odors; neither replaces preventing smoke from entering or being produced indoors.
Can an air purifier get rid of secondhand smoke?
No. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says prohibiting smoking inside or near homes and other enclosed spaces is the only way to eliminate exposure and its associated health risks. Smoke can move between rooms, so smoking in a different room does not protect other occupants. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) likewise advises not smoking or allowing anyone to smoke in the home or car.
Some air cleaners can remove a portion of respirable tobacco-smoke particles when appropriately sized and operated, but air cleaning cannot fully protect occupants from secondhand smoke. Treat a purifier as a supplementary measure if smoke is present, not as a health-protective substitute for keeping smoking out. What to look for in a purifier for smoke
Smoke CADR matched to the room
For particle removal, compare a purifier’s smoke clean air delivery rate (CADR) with the area it must serve. CADR indicates how quickly a unit removes particles; a higher rating generally corresponds to more particle removal and a larger recommended room area. It does not measure gas or odor removal.

The EPA’s room-sizing guidance estimates these minimum particle CADRs for rooms with eight-foot ceilings. These are sizing estimates, not health thresholds:

Use the actual area the purifier needs to serve, not just the size of the room where it sits. For high ceilings or an open floor plan, consider a larger effective area or more than one unit. The EPA’s Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home explains CADR and room sizing.

Mechanical particle filtration
Smoke contains particles that mechanical filters can capture. A HEPA filter is a common mechanical option, but the filter label alone does not tell you whether a unit can handle your room: check the smoke CADR and the room-area rating as well. Avoid relying on vague claims such as “smoke removal” without a particle-performance rating.
Activated carbon or another gas sorbent
Particle filters and gas filters do different jobs. HEPA and other mechanical filters capture particles; activated carbon or another suitable sorbent is used to remove some gases and odors. EPA notes that a portable cleaner with high CADR and an activated-carbon filter can filter both particles and gases, but CADR only rates particle removal. The amount and construction of the carbon media matter; a thin carbon-coated layer may not offer the same capacity as a substantial bed, and EPA says a large amount may be needed for effective gas removal.

Check whether a manufacturer discloses the type and amount of gas-sorbent material. If it does not, the product’s odor-removal capacity is difficult to compare. No filter should be assumed to remove every smoke-related gas.
Noise and practical upkeep
Purifiers generally filter more air at higher fan speeds and with longer operation. Compare noise at the speed you can realistically tolerate, since a powerful setting that is rarely used may not suit everyday needs. Check how often filters need replacement, the cost and availability of compatible replacements, and whether the unit clearly indicates when a filter change is due. A loaded filter works less effectively; follow the manufacturer’s maintenance schedule.

How to choose and use one
- Keep smoke out first. Do not allow smoking inside the home, car, or another enclosed space. An open window or a separate room does not make indoor smoking safe.
- Measure the area to serve. Include connected open-plan space and account for ceilings higher than eight feet.
- Compare smoke CADR with the room. Use the EPA estimates as a particle-sizing guide, then check the model’s stated room coverage and CADR. Do not interpret either as proof that smoke exposure is eliminated.
- Check both filter functions. Look for mechanical particle filtration and, if gas or odor reduction is a priority, a disclosed activated-carbon or other gas-sorbent filter.
- Choose a setting you can use. Consider noise at the operating speed you expect to run, and plan for replacement filters that are available for the model.
- Operate and maintain it consistently. Run the purifier for the time needed and at the highest tolerable setting, and replace filters as directed. A purifier only treats air that reaches it.
What about a whole-home HVAC filter?
A central HVAC system is a separate option from a portable room purifier. EPA advises using a filter rated MERV 13, or as high as the system can accommodate, and checking compatibility with the system before upgrading. A higher-rated filter that the equipment cannot handle is not a suitable choice. HVAC filtration also does not make smoking indoors safe or eliminate exposure. Which purifier is best?
There is no single model that can be named best for every home on the evidence here. EPA does not certify or recommend specific brands or models. Compare current product specifications for smoke CADR, room area, gas-sorbent construction, usable-speed noise, and replacement-filter availability. A search phrase such as “HEPA air purifier with activated carbon filter” can help find products with both particle and gas-filter components, but it is not evidence that a particular unit will remove smoke adequately.
