A room-sized portable HEPA air cleaner can reduce airborne particles, but it is a supplement to—not a treatment for—lung disease. Choose by the room’s size and the unit’s particle-cleaning capacity, avoid devices that intentionally produce ozone, and address pollution sources and ventilation as well as filtration. No particular brand or model is established as best for people with lung disease.
What an air purifier can—and cannot—do
Portable air cleaners can reduce some airborne particles in the space they serve. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) says air cleaning may produce small improvements in respiratory health and allergy or asthma symptoms, but effects are not always noticeable and do not extend to every symptom. In its asthma guideline, the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute reports that most of the studies it reviewed failed to show an effect on asthma symptoms or pulmonary function. Filtering particles is therefore not proof that a device will improve a particular person’s lung disease.
An air cleaner is only one part of improving indoor air. Reduce or remove pollution sources where possible and ventilate with clean outdoor air when conditions allow; filtration supplements those measures. As the EPA puts it, “No air cleaner or filter will eliminate all of the air pollutants in your home.” EPA, Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home; EPA, Will air cleaners reduce health risks?; NHLBI, Expert Panel Report 3, Section 3; EPA, Improving Indoor Air Quality.
How to choose a portable air cleaner
1. Match particle-cleaning capacity to the room
Use the clean air delivery rate (CADR) to compare how quickly a unit removes particles, then match its capacity to the area it will serve. For small particles, the EPA advises checking the tobacco-smoke CADR, the smallest particle category in common CADR examples. Its estimated minimums below assume an 8-foot ceiling; the agency describes the figures as estimates, not guarantees.

| Room area | Estimated minimum CADR |
|---|---|
| 100 square feet | 65 cfm |
| 200 square feet | 130 cfm |
| 300 square feet | 195 cfm |
| 400 square feet | 260 cfm |
| 500 square feet | 325 cfm |
| 600 square feet | 390 cfm |
These are EPA estimates for particle removal at 8-foot ceilings, published in 2018. A higher ceiling or open floor plan may call for more capacity or more than one unit. A portable cleaner is intended for the room or area it serves, not automatically the whole house. EPA, Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.
2. Match the filter to the pollutant
CADR rates particle removal; it does not establish how well a device removes gases. For gases, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), or some odors, look for activated carbon or another filter designed for gases. Gas-filter performance does not have widely used consumer rating systems, and effective adsorption requires a substantial amount of material. A high particle CADR is not evidence of VOC, radon, or other gas removal.

3. Check for ozone and other byproducts
Avoid air cleaners that intentionally produce ozone. Ozone irritates the lungs, and some electronic or ionizing approaches may have ozone-emission potential. Check emissions information for the specific device rather than assuming all units using a particular technology perform alike. EPA, Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home; EPA, Will air cleaners reduce health risks?.
4. Consider how you will actually run and maintain it
More operating time and higher fan speeds generally increase filtration; lower speeds filter less air. Check that the noise and operating pattern are practical for the room. Filters need regular replacement, and dirty or overloaded filters do not work well. Replacement schedules, filter availability, and costs vary by model, so check the manufacturer’s instructions and confirm compatible replacements are available before buying. EPA, Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.

Other ways to filter indoor air
Central HVAC filtration
If your home has central heating or cooling, the EPA recommends a MERV 13 filter—or the highest rating the system can accommodate. An HVAC filter serves the central system while it runs; it is not the same as a portable cleaner continuously serving a particular room.
DIY box-fan air cleaners
A DIY box-fan cleaner may reduce particles, but results depend on its design and construction. Commercial units with a known CADR are typically preferable when you need a standardized indication of performance and room size served. EPA, Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home; EPA, DIY Air Cleaners.

- Air Quality Monitoring: This air purifier is designed with a built-in PM2.5 sensor and real-time display, eliminating the need for guesswork about air quality. In auto mode, when it detects a decline in air quality, the purifier with the indicator changing to green, blue, yellow or red, and the fan accelerating to purify the air more efficiently.
- Remarkable Filtration: Featuring an advanced filtration system, the air purifier effectively removes airborne particles (such as dust, pollen, pet dander, and smoke ). When activated, this air cleaner can refresh the atmosphere in a space up to 2400 sq ft / 223 m² every 30 minutes, ensuring you enjoy a fresh and comfortable air quality throughout the day in your home or office. (Note: For significant amounts of pet hair on floors or fabric surfaces, we recommend use other cleaning products.)
- 3-Stage Advanced Filtration: Our air filter combines a high-efficiency purification filter with 3 layers to can effectively filter out the impurities in the air. This high-performance system delivers thorough air purification, creating a healthier living environment for you and your loved one. (Note: The filter needs to be replaced every 3 to 6 months, and must not be cleaned with water or other liquids.)
Address moisture and mold at the source
Filtration may remove some airborne particles generated by mold, but it does not fix a leak, dampness, or the underlying moisture problem. Address the water source and clean up mold; a portable air cleaner is not mold remediation. EPA, Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.
Why there is no universal “best” model
The EPA provides selection criteria, not a current product ranking, and does not endorse individual brands or models: “EPA does not certify or recommend specific brands or models of air filters or portable air cleaners.” A practical choice depends on the room, target pollutant, acceptable operating speed, ozone-emissions information, and replacement-filter maintenance. No device selection should be treated as a lung-disease treatment recommendation. EPA, Guide to Air Cleaners in the Home.
