These are distinct materials, not two names for the same black stone. Black Mexican beach pebbles are described by suppliers as smooth; black lava rock is porous. That difference changes the look and feel of a finished area, so choose by the appearance and application you want rather than color alone.

Choose a size and depth for the project
Rock size affects both appearance and the area a given quantity can cover. Smaller pebbles can produce a finer-looking surface; larger stones create a coarser look. Confirm the actual size grade on the specific listing—generic labels such as “black pebble” do not establish a uniform stone size.

Plan the depth as well as the area. Basalite states that one bag covers 3 square feet at a 2-inch depth for its decorative-rock offering. This is a general page claim, so confirm that it applies to the particular product and bag you intend to buy. The black pebble supplier gives different per-ton coverage estimates by size:

Estimate quantity and compare supply options
- Measure the area. Multiply the bed or path’s length by its width to get square footage. For an irregular area, divide it into simpler shapes and add their areas.
- Set a target depth. Decide how deep the rock layer needs to be for the intended decorative application; the relevant coverage figure depends on depth.
- Use the selected seller’s estimate. Match the estimate to the precise stone size and package. If the listing does not give coverage at your planned depth, ask the supplier before ordering.
- Check how it is sold and delivered. Confirm whether the order is bagged, palletized or bulk, as well as freight, delivery area, minimum quantity and current stock.
Bagged material can be practical for a smaller purchase; bulk supply is an option for larger projects, but minimums and freight vary by supplier. The direct black pebble supplier states a 24-ton minimum for its direct bulk supply. That is specific to that supplier, not a general minimum for black pebbles. A local stone yard or decorative-rock supplier may have different quantities and delivery terms.
