For a deeper dent that needs material built up and shaped, use body filler first—not a thin layer of spot putty.
What putty should you use to fix a small dent in your car?
Choose glazing or spot putty for minor surface defects left after the main repair: scratches, rock chips, pinholes, nicks and shallow blemishes. 3M describes its one-part Bondo Glazing & Spot Putty, Part 907, for those kinds of small repairs and specifies a 4.5 oz package. Is the best body repair putty under $20 actually under $20?
Part 907 is a plausible product to compare for a small repair, but the price threshold is a retailer fact, not a manufacturer specification. A live price and listing were not verified here. Before purchasing, confirm the current price, package size and that the listing is the 4.5 oz Part 907 product. Do not assume a remembered or old listing is still under $20.
How to repair a deeper dent before applying spot putty
3M’s Bondo Original Filler process uses filler to build and shape a deeper repair, then glazing and spot putty for small imperfections. Its product-specific guidance calls for working at 45°F (7°C) or above for best results. Read the exact filler and putty labels, including safety information, and follow the paint manufacturer’s finishing recommendations.

- Clean the damaged area. Remove dirt and contaminants before beginning.
- Sand to bare metal, then clean again. 3M’s instructions call for sanding damaged paint, primer and rust to bare metal and cleaning the area a second time.
- Mix filler and hardener as directed. Use the proportions and handling directions on the product label.
- Apply a thin initial coat and allow it to cure. Build and shape the repair with body filler rather than trying to fill a deep dent with spot putty.
- Shape, sand and prime the filler repair. Follow the filler and paint-system instructions.
- Use glazing or spot putty for small remaining imperfections, then re-prime. 3M’s guidance says to apply it to small imperfections and re-prime with 2–3 coats.
3M’s full procedure is specific to its Bondo Original Filler system; consult the manufacturer’s instructions rather than treating the sequence as universal across all products.
