There is no single best 28-inch snow blower for every driveway. The right choice depends on the surface and slope, the snow you typically clear, how much steering help you want, where you can store the machine, and whether local dealers can support the exact model. The strongest candidates in the available manufacturer specifications are Honda’s HSS928A family and Troy-Bilt’s Storm 2890 family; Ariens’ Deluxe 28 is a region-specific European option. Compare configurations and verified specifications—not just the shared 28-inch width.
What a 28-inch snow blower is—and who it suits
A 28-inch clearing width can reduce the number of passes across a broad driveway, but width alone does not determine how quickly or comfortably a machine clears snow. Intake height, drive system, snow conditions, controls, and the operator’s ability to turn and store the machine all matter. A narrower model may be easier to fit through tight paths or maneuver in a small storage area; a wider machine may make sense where there is room to handle it and substantial snow to clear.
These candidates are two-stage machines: their specifications and features are intended for heavier clearing tasks than a basic single-stage machine. That does not establish how each performs in a particular storm. None of the models below was independently tested for this comparison, so treat throwing distance, capacity, and snow-depth statements as manufacturer specifications or guidance.

Choose wheel drive or track drive for your property
Wheel drive
Wheel-drive options include Honda’s HSS928AW/AWD and the Troy-Bilt Storm 2890. Consider this configuration if your clearing route is relatively straightforward and you prefer a wheeled machine. The cited specifications do not establish that wheel drive is best for any particular slope, surface, or snow condition, so ask a local dealer to explain how the exact configuration is intended to be used on your terrain.
Track drive
Track options include Honda’s HSS928AT/ATD and the Troy-Bilt Storm Tracker 2890. A track configuration may be worth considering when your route includes slopes or packed areas, but do not assume that tracks always provide better traction: the cited pages do not provide a comparative test. Ask about turning effort, handling on your surface, and any operating limits for the specific model.

Match the machine to your snow and clearing route
Look beyond advertised maximum throw
Honda lists a maximum discharge distance of 52 feet for its HSS928A track model. That is a manufacturer-listed maximum, not a guarantee of routine distance in wet, compacted, or windblown snow. Plan where discharged snow can safely land, and ask how conditions affect the model’s performance rather than choosing on the maximum figure alone.
Use intake height and capacity claims carefully
Honda publishes a 21.7-inch clearing height for the cited track model; Troy-Bilt lists a 20-inch intake height for both Storm 2890 versions. Troy-Bilt also describes its two-stage range as intended for heavy, wet snow and says the category is engineered for up to 12 inches of snow, driveways up to 15 cars, and smooth or gravel surfaces. Those are manufacturer category guidelines, not an independent performance test or a universal limit. Snow depth, density, drift size, surface, and how often you clear can change the workload substantially.

Compare controls, weight, and ownership needs
Starting and chute controls
Troy-Bilt lists electric start for both Storm 2890 versions. Honda lists electric-start variants in the HSS928A family; the track model page also specifies remote electric joystick chute adjustment. Ariens’ European page lists both electric and recoil start, plus Auto-Turn. These features address different needs: consider how often you change chute direction, whether you want help steering, and which starting method you prefer. Verify the controls on the exact suffix and regional model, because a family name does not guarantee identical equipment.
Plan for weight and storage
Honda lists dry weights of 265 lb for HSS928AT and 276 lb for HSS928ATD. That is a substantial machine to position, transport, and store, so measure the route into your storage area and consider delivery, loading, and seasonal service before ordering. The cited sources do not give comparable weights for the Troy-Bilt or Ariens candidates.

Check warranty and service locally
Honda reports a three-year residential warranty and a 12-month commercial warranty for the cited HSS928A track configuration. Review the current official warranty document for exclusions and coverage details before relying on those terms. For any brand, ask whether a nearby dealer services the exact model, can obtain replacement parts, and offers setup or delivery. A machine’s fit for your property also depends on whether you can get timely support during winter.
Prices, regional availability, and the models not ready for comparison
Honda’s listed figures are manufacturer MSRPs, not guaranteed transaction prices. Troy-Bilt’s retrieved product pages showed prices while marking both products unavailable; neither figure confirms present stock. Contact local dealers for current availability, final pricing, delivery, and service options.
Ariens’ cited Deluxe 28 page is European. Its displacement figures conflict—254 cc in marketing copy versus 291 cm³ in the technical table—so do not use either figure as a resolved specification without checking the model manual or a current, region-specific specification sheet.
EGO’s 2026 catalog search-result text identifies a POWER+ self-propelled 28-inch two-stage snow blower with two 6.0Ah batteries, but the catalog could not be opened and an accessible current product page was not established. That is not enough to compare its full specifications, included batteries, runtime, or regional availability with the documented models above. Verify those details directly with EGO before treating it as a candidate.
Quick Recap
A practical buying checklist
- Measure driveway width, slopes, turning areas, gates, paths, and the storage entrance; decide whether a 28-inch machine fits the route as well as the open driveway.
- Describe your usual snow: depth, wetness, compaction, drifting, and how often you expect to clear it.
- Compare the exact drive configuration, controls, starting method, intake height, and published weight—not just the brand or model family.
- Confirm the complete model suffix, regional specification, current price, local stock, warranty terms, and nearby service support with the manufacturer or dealer.
- Ask which replacement shear bolts, skid shoes, clean-out tools, or other accessories are compatible with your exact model and model year; do not assume accessories fit across a product family.
