For shelves, desks and other industrial-style furniture, black iron pipe and malleable iron fittings offer a documented, practical starting point. But “antique” describes a part’s age or provenance—not proof that it is compatible, structurally sound or safe to reuse. Choose fittings by their form, dimensions, thread compatibility, finish and intended use; assess any genuinely old part separately before putting it into service.
What pipe fittings work for decor and furniture projects?
DIY examples show pipe and fittings used with wood for shelving and a desk, as well as for furniture assemblies. These examples use contemporary materials; they do not establish that antique fittings were used or that a particular design can carry a specific load.
- Shelving: Pipe flanges, elbows and other fittings can form supports and connections for wood boards. DIY Candy documents a black-pipe bookshelf, while The Home Depot shows a lighted pipe shelf. - Desk or table: Pipe can make a visible frame beneath a wood top, with additional fittings and pipe used for supports or shelves. Engineer Fix describes a pipe desk with shelves and black-pipe furniture in separate project guides: desk with shelves and black-pipe furniture.
- Lighted shelving: A shelf design that incorporates lighting combines furniture work with electrical components. Fitting selection alone does not resolve electrical requirements; use properly rated electrical parts and follow applicable electrical rules.
These projects demonstrate aesthetic possibilities, not structural ratings. A manufacturer’s fitting standard or suitability for a piping application does not certify a completed shelf, desk or table.
How to choose fittings for the design
Match the component to the joint
Start with the geometry of the frame. Flanges can connect pipe to a surface, elbows or bends change direction, tees create a branch, couplings join compatible threaded pipe, and caps close an end. Confirm the exact components required by the design rather than buying a visually similar assortment.

Check size and thread specification
Two pieces described as pipe fittings are not necessarily compatible. Verify the actual nominal size and thread specification for both the pipe and each fitting. Manufacturer information cites standards for particular product ranges, including EN 10242 and EN 10226-1; these references apply to specified products, not automatically to every fitting that looks similar. ATUSA describes its malleable cast-iron fitting range and forms in manufacturer product information. Uponor says: “Malleable cast iron fittings are designed according to the EN 10242 standard and available in black and hot-dip galvanized versions.” See Uponor’s product information for its stated product details.
Choose the finish for appearance and use
Black and hot-dip galvanized finishes create different looks; a painted finish is another option shown in DIY project guidance. Compare finish separately from size and compatibility. A finish that suits a decorative interior does not, by itself, establish suitability for plumbing, exposure conditions or furniture loads. What changes when the fittings are genuinely antique?
For an old fitting, establish what it is, what material and thread it has, its condition, and—if possible—its prior use. Appearance alone cannot establish provenance, compatibility or fitness for service. The available project instructions concern newly purchased black pipe and fittings; they do not provide an authentication method or treatment guidance for historic parts, corrosion, unknown coatings, or fittings that previously carried gas, water or another substance.
If the fitting’s history or condition is uncertain, get an assessment from a qualified specialist before using it in a load-bearing assembly or reconnecting it to any working plumbing. For an item with historic finishes or value, seek conservation advice before cleaning or stripping it. Do not assume a fitting safe for a display object is safe for a shelf, table or plumbing connection.

Prepare new fittings carefully
Project-specific DIY guidance includes cleaning new fittings before assembly: DIY Candy advises removing factory oil, and The Home Depot’s project includes cleaning and finishing steps. These directions are not a universal treatment plan for old, coated or unidentified parts. For new components, follow the manufacturer’s instructions and the chosen finish’s requirements; test a finish on a discreet area when appropriate.

Before assembling a shelf or furniture frame
- List the required forms—such as flanges, elbows, tees, couplings or caps—based on the frame layout.
- Confirm pipe and fitting size and thread compatibility from product specifications, not visual resemblance.
- Choose black, galvanized or painted appearance without treating finish as evidence of structural capacity.
- Inspect every reused part and establish its provenance and prior service where possible; consult a specialist when condition or history is unclear.
