Fluke 117, Klein MM720, and AstroAI DM6000AR offer different documented feature profiles, but the available manufacturer information does not establish an independently tested winner. Treat them as examples to evaluate against your work and the exact model manual.
Start with the electrical environment and safety category
Before comparing convenience features, identify where you will measure and the voltage and measurement category required there. A meter’s category rating is a limit tied to specific conditions; it is not a blanket approval for every installation. Confirm that both the meter and its leads are suitable for the task in the exact model’s current manual.
For example, Fluke specifies CAT III 600 V for the 117. Klein’s MM600 page lists CAT IV 600 V/CAT III 1000 V for that model, but also says the MM600 is no longer in production and points to the MM720 as a newer model. Those MM600 ratings should not be transferred to the MM720: check the MM720’s own current specifications and manual before relying on a rating or recommending it for a particular installation. Compare the documented examples by fit, not by a winner label

Match functions and range control to the work
List the measurements you actually need
Decide whether the job requires AC or DC voltage and current, resistance, continuity, diode testing, capacitance, frequency, temperature, or duty cycle. A longer function list is only useful if it covers measurements you expect to make.
Understand what auto-ranging does—and does not do
Auto-ranging selects a measurement range; it does not necessarily select AC versus DC, put the lead in the correct jack, or choose the right measurement function. AstroAI notes that manual range control can be useful for repeat checks because it can keep the range from changing between readings. Choose the workflow that suits the task, then verify the function and lead jack before taking a measurement.

Read accuracy specifications rather than relying on counts
A display count describes display capacity, not measurement accuracy. Compare the accuracy specification for the function and range you will use, including any digit term, and check the range’s resolution. AstroAI explicitly cautions against treating display capacity as an accuracy rating.
Use True RMS when the AC signal calls for it
True RMS can matter when measuring AC waveforms, but it is not a general guarantee of accuracy and is not needed for basic DC battery voltage. Check the meter’s specified AC bandwidth, range, accuracy, and signal limits against the waveform you intend to measure.

Check current-measurement limits before using the meter in series
A current mode alone does not show that a meter is suitable for every current task, including a long parasitic-drain test. Before measuring current, consult the exact manual for the input jack, fuse, resolution, burden voltage, and any time limits. Do not assume that a meter’s general feature list settles whether it is suitable for a particular procedure.
Inspect the leads and follow the exact manual
Klein’s MM700 instruction manual says to verify meter operation before each use by measuring a known voltage or current. It also says not to measure resistance or continuity on a live circuit, to stay within the meter’s category-based rating, and to keep fingers away from exposed probe contacts. For the MM700, Klein specifies CAT IV-rated test leads and advises caution above 25 V AC RMS or 60 V DC. These instructions are specific to that manual; check the applicable manual for another model rather than assuming its lead requirements are the same. Klein MM700 instruction manual.

Klein’s MM600 product information also warns against using a damaged meter or leads and against measuring resistance or continuity on a live circuit. Inspect the meter and leads before use, and follow the safety instructions for the exact instrument and measurement.

- Compare accuracy, resolution, and AC bandwidth for the measurements that matter.
- Decide whether auto-ranging or manual range control better suits your workflow.
- For current measurements, verify the jack, fuse, burden voltage, resolution, and time limits in the manual.
- Check display readability, size, grip, backlight, and included accessories for the work environment.
These checks help distinguish a useful convenience feature from a capability or rating the instrument does not actually provide. Manufacturer specifications and manuals are the authority for the chosen model; no independently tested performance ranking is established here.
