The right tools for an air-conditioning refrigerant-line repair depend on the tubing and the connection specified for the equipment. A tubing cutter and deburring tool prepare the tube; an HVAC flaring tool forms a flare only where the system calls for one. A tube expander or swage tool serves a different type of joint. None of these tools, by itself, makes refrigerant service safe or authorizes someone to perform it.
Which tools are used for air-conditioning refrigerant lines?
These tools cover tubing preparation and forming. Choose them only after identifying the line material, dimensions, connection type, and equipment instructions.
| Tool | What it does | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Tubing cutter | Cuts tubing to length before an applicable connection procedure. | Compatibility with the tube’s outside diameter and material, clearance at the work area, and ability to make a clean cut. |
| Deburring tool or reamer | Removes burrs from a cut end before flaring when the procedure requires it. | Tube-size range, access, and control to keep debris out of the system. |
| HVAC flaring tool | Forms a flare on tubing for a connection designed for flared tubing. | Compatible tube sizes and material, the specified connection standard, equipment instructions, and repeatable forming. |
| Tube expander or swage tool | Expands a tube end for an applicable tubing joint; this is a different forming method from flaring. | Tube material and size range, tool type, access, and the joining procedure specified for the application. |
How do you choose the right tubing tool?
Start with the equipment documentation, not the tool catalogue. The manual determines whether the connection is flared or uses another method, and what tubing dimensions and materials apply. Then check that the tool matches those requirements and that it can be used in the available space.
- Confirm the connection type. Do not assume a line can be repaired with a flare or swaged joint just because you have the tool.
- Match the tubing. Verify outside diameter and material against the tool’s stated capabilities.
- Consider access. Clearance can affect whether a cutter or forming tool can be positioned and operated as intended.
- Follow the equipment procedure. A tool’s stated size range does not establish that a particular connection is approved for the equipment.
When are cutting, deburring, and flaring appropriate?
A Trane manual for the equipment covered by that document describes cutting copper tubing to length, removing burrs, and forming a flare for specified refrigerant-tubing connections. It is an example for that product family, not a universal repair procedure. Follow the applicable instructions for the specific equipment and connection: Trane manual on refrigerant tubing connections.

- All In One Kit: The flare tool set includes 1 flaring tool, Metric and Inch clamps, cutter and deburr. Highly dependable, economical choice for refrigeration, heating air and other industrial markets
Where that procedure applies, the cutter prepares the tube, the deburring tool cleans the cut end, and the correctly sized flaring tool forms the connection. The required sequence and connection details must come from the equipment documentation; using a flaring tool does not validate a repair on a system that calls for a different joint.
When is a tube expander or swage tool used?
Expansion is a separate tubing-forming approach, not another name for flaring. Mastercool describes its 71600-A seven-head tube-expanding kit as intended to expand copper, aluminum, and soft-steel tubing; its product page lists the included heads and reamer. Those specifications establish the tool’s stated category and capabilities, not that it suits every air-conditioning line or performs better than another tool. Confirm that the equipment’s specified joint calls for expansion and that the tool matches the tubing.

Refrigerant work has legal and technical limits
In the United States, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Section 608 guidance states that intentionally venting covered refrigerants—including ozone-depleting substance refrigerants and substitutes such as HFCs—is prohibited while maintaining, servicing, repairing, or disposing of air-conditioning or refrigeration equipment. The EPA page also links to service-practice and leak-repair requirements: EPA guidance on managing refrigeration and A/C equipment.
This is regulatory guidance, not a step-by-step repair authorization. A cutter, flare tool, or swage tool does not make refrigerant handling safe, compliant, or appropriate for an unqualified person. Before any work, identify the equipment and connection, consult its current documentation, and ensure the work meets applicable requirements.

- 5PCS Set: Includes Eccentric Single Flaring Tool, 2 Flaring Clamps(Metric & Imperial types), Pipe Cutter(for 5-32mm or 1/5'' to 1 1/4'' tubes), Deburrer and Manual, all in a nice storage case.
- Flaring Tool: Only for single flare, 45° eccentric type cone design makes it easier to produce a smooth quality flare without leak. Equipped with 2 Clamps, compatible with 1/4", 5/16", 3/8 ", 1/2", 5/8 ", 3/4", 6mm, 9mm, 10mm, 12mm, 16mm and 19mm (O.D.) tubes. Suitable for the soft copper, brass, aluminum, mild steel tubes, air heaters, refrigerator, air conditioners, HVAC, electrical products, etc. (Not suitable for super soft aluminum)
- Unique Design: Check it in the 2nd and 3rd picture. The arrow on the tool and the slot on the clamp side ensure the tool is in place. The guide plate will help you quickly confirm the perfect length of the tube above the clamp opening for better size flare. When finishing flaring, the clutch in the rotating handle will be separated.
- High Quality: The handle is made of aluminum alloy, durable and will last for a long time. The flare tool with the deburr tool and cutter makes perfect flares every time. What a heavy duty tool kit! The suitcase makes it easier to keep and carry.
Do not confuse stationary HVAC lines with automotive A/C hoses
Automotive air-conditioning hose repair is a different context from stationary HVAC refrigerant tubing. The EPA Section 609 manual discusses automotive A/C hose-repair kits and warns against improvised hose crimping. Its hose guidance should not be treated as a procedure for stationary refrigerant lines.
