The resident and his grandchildren, who had been asleep, were alerted and evacuated safely. The account was reported by PerthNow on 2 March 2023.
How the fire unfolded
PerthNow reported that the fire began among rubbish at the rear of the garden and was moving toward the lounge room. Resident Gordon Ryder, 56, and his grandchildren were asleep when they heard banging at the door and someone calling for them to evacuate. The report said everyone was safe.
Witnesses said flames rose above the roof, while neighbours feared the fire could spread to nearby homes. An unnamed witness told PerthNow: “That eight minutes felt like a lifetime but thankfully everyone was safe.”
What residents and firefighters did
- Neighbours raised the alarm; PerthNow reported that six community members called triple zero.
- Residents moved cars and animals away from the fire and brought hoses to the scene. Some climbed onto a roof to help.
- Seven firefighting appliances were dispatched from Duncraig, Wangara, Joondalup and Osborne Park stations. PerthNow reported that the fire was not extinguished until 7pm.
Reported damage and repair estimate
The fire damaged the garage timber frame and fence line, and damage was also reported to a neighbouring property’s roof. PerthNow put potential repairs at up to $5,000; that was an estimate, not a confirmed final bill.
