Heron’s fountain uses gravity-driven water transfer and air pressure to produce a jet, but it is not perpetual motion: the stream slows and stops as water shifts between connected vessels. A European replica in the Science Museum Group’s collection is dated to 1770–1820, making “antique” a fitting description for this particular apparatus.
How Heron’s fountain works
The fountain is a pneumatic and hydraulic demonstration: water moves between vessels, displacing air; the resulting pressure drives water through a narrow nozzle. The exact vessel arrangement varies between versions, so a diagram or replica should be read on its own terms rather than treated as a universal layout.
- Water enters a lower vessel. In the Science and Museum of the History of Science’s working-model description, water poured into an upper cup flows through a pipe into a lower tank, pushing air out of that tank.
- Air pressure is redirected. The displaced air travels through another pipe into a partially filled middle vessel.
- Pressurized water rises. Pressure on the water in the middle vessel forces it up a smaller tube and out as a visible jet.
- The effect ends as the water shifts. The lower tank fills and the upper vessel empties; the jet loses height and eventually stops. As the museum puts it, “The device remains in operation until the lower tank is full and the upper one empty.” Institute and Museum of the History of Science
Other descriptions emphasize different vessel configurations. The Kotsanas Museum describes one open container and two airtight containers: water poured into the open upper container flows to a lower airtight vessel, whose displaced air pushes water from the middle vessel toward the nozzle. That account says the flow continues until the middle container is empty. Kotsanas Museum of Ancient Greek Technology
Kenyon College describes the familiar effect as water’s weight compressing air in a lower reservoir, with pressure transmitted to an upper water reservoir to force water up the nozzle. Its account also notes that the jet declines during operation. Kenyon College Early Apparatus Collection

What makes it an antique apparatus
The historical fountain belongs to the tradition of pneumatic devices described in Heron’s Treatise on Pneumatics, which the Institute and Museum of the History of Science dates to the mid-first century AD. Such devices used air, water, or steam pressure and could both impress audiences and demonstrate mechanical effects. Institute and Museum of the History of Science
The Science Museum Group catalogs an unsigned European replica made between 1770 and 1820. Its entry lists brass, glass, cork, and unidentified rubber; dimensions of 405 × 245 mm; and a mass of 2.96 kg. Those details describe that cataloged object, not every historical or modern Heron’s fountain. Science Museum Group collection record

- Kits include everything needed, from valves to fittings, reducing installation time
- Triple adjustment valves are located above water level, for greater comfort and convenience
- Matching components work with TidalWave Pumps and Fountain Basins to eliminate compatibility concerns
- Kits include sealing strips for ¾" PVC standpipes to eliminate the need to drill large holes for bulkheads in ceramic vases
Demonstration versions and what they show
The University of Iowa Department of Physics & Astronomy presents the apparatus under “Pressure vs. Water Height.” Its examples range from a pop-bottle version to a larger setup using two five-gallon glass carboys and connecting hoses. Iowa notes that greater separation between reservoirs can produce greater internal pressure and a higher stream. University of Iowa demonstration notes
| Configuration | What it demonstrates | Practical consideration |
|---|---|---|
| Pop-bottle version | A compact demonstration of water transfer, air pressure, and the resulting jet. | Requires suitable tubing and sealed connections; the source does not establish that a generic bottle set is a complete kit. |
| Large carboy setup | A larger, more visible demonstration using two five-gallon glass carboys and hoses. | Water-filled carboys are fragile, and Iowa warns that the demonstration can become messy if performed incorrectly. |
What a simple build needs
A bottle-based demonstration is distinct from a museum-quality antique replica. The documented modern examples support clear bottles and flexible tubing as useful supply categories, but a working build also depends on the vessel layout, airtight seals where required, and suitable connections.
