Beautiful Flowers That Smell Awful: Why the Corpse Flower Stinks

The corpse flower pairs a dramatic, dark-red display with a rotting-flesh odor that helps attract pollinators. Its towering bloom is actually a cluster of small flowers.

The titan arum is striking to look at and notorious for smelling like rotting flesh. That foul odor is part of its pollination strategy: it helps attract insects that visit carrion. Often called the corpse flower, it is also easy to misidentify—its towering display is a cluster of many small flowers, not one giant bloom.

Why does the corpse flower smell so bad?

Titan arum (Amorphophallus titanum), native to Sumatra, Indonesia, produces an odor that resembles rotting flesh. Flies and beetles associated with carrion are among the insects it attracts; sources also mention sweat bees. The smell and the bloom’s dark red, flesh-like appearance work together to make the plant resemble a decaying food source. Pollinators and their precise importance to the plant are still being studied.

The odor comes from a mixture of compounds, not one chemical alone. The Harvard Arnold Arboretum identifies dimethyl trisulfide and dimethyl disulfide, as well as trimethylamine and isovaleric acid. These compounds are associated with smells compared to rotting cabbage or onions, rotting fish, and sweaty gym socks. Harvard Arnold Arboretum’s titan arum FAQ explains that, rather than advertising food resources with petals, the plant uses a scent like rotting flesh.

The plant also warms its flowering structure, helping volatile odor compounds disperse. UC Riverside Botanic Gardens says the spadix can heat to about 16°F above ambient temperature; UC Davis Botanical Conservatory reports temperatures up to 37°C (99°F). These institutional descriptions explain how warmth contributes to scent release, but they do not establish a reliable distance at which the smell can be detected.

Corpse Flower - World's Largest Flower - 8+ Feet Tall - 10 Seeds - Growing Instructions are Included
  • The Corpse Flower, also known as Amorphophallus titanum or titan arum, is the world’s largest unbranched inflorescence (cluster of flowers on a main stem). This cluster of flowers is wrapped in a tall green spathe, surrounded by a deep burgundy bloom resembling the color and texture of flesh. This, along with the pungent odor make it memorable.
  • Carnivorous Plant. These flowers usually take 7-10 years to bloom for the first time, and then can re-bloom every 3-5 years afterward, usually in the summer.
  • Best Grown in a Greenhouse or Inside in Pots. They eventually have a large corm underground. See the Product Details on this listing.
  • Soak the seed and press gently into damp soil until covered. Keep Moist. A plastic dome over the pot will keep it moist. These flowers are native to Sumatra and Borneo.
  • Marde Ross & Company has been a Licensed California Nursery since 1985.

Is the titan arum one flower?

No. The conspicuous structure is an inflorescence: many small flowers clustered on a central stalk called a spadix, with a leaf-like sheath called a spathe around it. The individual flowers are small and grow near the base of the spadix, inside the spathe. Harvard describes the unbranched inflorescence as reaching up to 3 metres tall.

Its flowering sequence helps limit self-pollination. Female flowers become receptive before male flowers release pollen. An insect carrying pollen from another inflorescence can therefore deposit it on receptive female flowers before the same bloom sheds its own pollen.

How does it compare with Rafflesia?

Titan arum and Rafflesia arnoldii are different plants, and their famous blooms are different structures. Titan arum is known for having the world’s largest unbranched inflorescence; Harvard identifies Rafflesia arnoldii as the largest single flower, at about one metre across. That is an anatomical comparison, not a ranking of which species smells worse: the available sources do not provide comparable scent measurements for such a ranking.

How long does the smell last?

The scent peaks around the time the inflorescence opens and fades quickly. Harvard Arnold Arboretum and UC Davis Botanical Conservatory describe a typical flowering period of roughly 24–48 hours. Individual blooms can vary, so that range is not a guarantee for every plant.

Why is the corpse flower difficult to grow?

Flowering can take years of growth, and the plant needs warm, humid conditions. Harvard says 7–10 years of leaf growth may be needed before the corm can produce an inflorescence. Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh’s growing conditions illustrate the demands: its plant is kept in a tropical greenhouse at around 21–25°C by day and about 80% humidity, in a 1,000-litre pot. The Garden says growing one at home would be difficult, though not impossible; those greenhouse conditions are its own setup, not a universal growing recipe.

Is the titan arum endangered?

Yes. Missouri Botanical Garden identifies titan arum as Endangered in the wild and native to Sumatra. UC Riverside Botanic Gardens reported an estimate of about 1,000 wild individuals in a 2022 explainer, while Harvard’s undated FAQ describes fewer than 1,000. These are source-attributed estimates, not a current census. Institutions cite habitat conversion, deforestation, illegal logging, and overcollection among the pressures; the available accounts do not establish that any single factor explains the plant’s rarity.
