If a residential electric baseboard heater will not heat, keeps shutting off, or will not turn off, start with the thermostat setting, the correct circuit breaker and any visible airflow blockage. Do not open the heater or thermostat, bypass a control, or keep resetting a breaker or high-limit switch that trips again. For wiring faults, repeated trips or signs of overheating, switch off the circuit if safe and contact a qualified electrician.
These steps apply to hardwired electric baseboard heaters. Gas hydronic systems and portable plug-in heaters have different controls and service requirements. The installed heater’s manual—not a generic reset or cleaning instruction—governs model-specific procedures.
Start with safe checks
- Identify the heater. Confirm it is a hardwired electric baseboard unit and note its brand and model. If it is a hydronic or plug-in unit, use the instructions for that system instead.
- Check the thermostat. Set it above the current room temperature and allow time for the heater to respond. If the heater continues running when the thermostat is set to stop, switch off its circuit if safe and arrange qualified diagnosis.
- Check the correct breaker. Look at the circuit breaker without removing the panel cover or opening the heater. If it is tripped, do not repeatedly reset it; a second trip calls for an electrician.
- Look for visible blockage. Check whether furniture, dust or other material is restricting the heater’s air path. Do not remove covers or reach inside to inspect wiring.
- Use only model-specific reset and cleaning instructions. Some Cadet models have a manual high-temperature reset, but designs and procedures differ. Follow the exact owner’s guide for power-off, cooling and reset steps.
Cadet’s Technical Troubleshooting FAQ says, “If the manual reset trips (which turns the heater off), the heater probably needs to be cleaned or it’s blocked.” Treat that as a possible cause, not permission to keep resetting the heater. A repeated trip signals a problem that needs attention.
If the heater does not turn on
First confirm that the thermostat is calling for heat, the breaker is on and the air path is not visibly blocked. If these checks do not resolve the problem, possible causes include a tripped high-temperature safety shutoff, loose supply connections or a faulty breaker, according to Cadet’s troubleshooting material. Those possibilities cannot be safely distinguished by opening the heater or tightening connections as a casual homeowner task.

Cadet’s owner’s guide advises: “If you are uncomfortable working with electricity, running electrical supply wire or installing a circuit breaker, please consult a licensed electrician.” Wiring, breaker and internal heater diagnosis should be left to a qualified electrician unless you are qualified and local rules permit the work.
If it shuts off or the reset keeps tripping
Dust, lint, an obstruction or abnormal temperature may activate a manual high-limit reset on a model that has one. Let the heater cool and clean it only as directed in the installed model’s manual. Cadet’s guide says that, for the models it covers, a high-temperature shutoff that trips more than once a day is grounds to replace the heater. Do not apply that model-specific threshold to other products: for another brand or model, contact its manufacturer or a qualified service provider if the reset trips again or the symptom persists.
A heater that trips a breaker repeatedly is a separate stop-use issue: do not keep restoring power to see whether it will stay on. Have an electrician diagnose the circuit and heater.

If the heater will not turn off
A defective thermostat is one possible cause. Cadet’s guide also lists, for applicable configurations, a missing thermostat or heater wattage that is incorrect for the room. Do not open or bypass the thermostat to test it. If the heater continues heating despite the control setting, switch off the circuit if safe and arrange qualified diagnosis.

Cadet says line-voltage thermostats are typically used for single-room electric baseboard heaters, while low-voltage thermostats are typically used for central systems; its FAQ describes conditions for using a low-voltage thermostat with a relay. These are not universal replacement instructions. Any replacement must be compatible with the heater’s voltage and electrical load; confirm the exact requirements and use an electrician for replacement wiring where appropriate.
If the breaker trips
A trip immediately after installation can point to several causes, including shorted wiring, a mismatch between supply voltage and heater rating, an overloaded circuit, loose connections or a faulty breaker. The symptom alone does not identify which one is responsible. Stop resetting a breaker that trips again and have a qualified electrician check the circuit and installation.

A historical U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recall illustrates why exact ratings matter: certain Dayton units labeled for 208/240 V could contain an internal heater rated for 120 V, creating a fire hazard. That notice concerned a specific model and date code; it does not show that ordinary installations share the defect. Check the exact product against the relevant CPSC Dayton recall notice.
If there is noise, odor or weak heat
When a heater runs but the room remains cool, verify the thermostat setting and check for visible obstruction. Room size, heat loss and installation conditions affect how much heat a space needs; the available manufacturer guidance does not establish a diagnosis from those symptoms alone.
Some manuals may describe a brief odor on first use, but persistent burning odor, smoke, sparking, scorching, melted plastic or unusual heat should not be dismissed as dust. Stop using the heater, switch off its circuit if safe and seek qualified service.

Clean and maintain it only as the manual directs
Cleaning and reset steps vary by model. Cadet’s maintenance guide directs readers to let the heater cool and remove dust or debris according to its product-specific procedure. It also warns that a mislabeled breaker may leave a heater energized even when it appears switched off. Verify power is off as the manual directs; if you cannot do so safely or lack the needed ability or equipment, contact a qualified electrician. Do not assume a wall-heater procedure or clearance applies to every baseboard heater.
Check recalls by exact model and date code
Brand name alone is not enough to establish that a heater or thermostat is recalled. Compare the exact brand, model and date code with the CPSC notice, then follow the notice’s remedy. Historical notices apply only to the products identified in them:
- Honeywell/Cadet thermostats: The CPSC’s 2011 notice covered specified models and date codes and said consumers should stop using affected recalled thermostats by setting them to 45 degrees or turning them off. It reported about 77,000 recalled units; that is a recall quantity, not a rate of heater failure. Check the CPSC thermostat recall notice for the affected products and remedy.
- Square D and Berko products: Historical CPSC notices describe fire or shock hazards involving deteriorating wiring in specified products. Check the exact product against the Square D notice and the Berko notice.
- Dayton heaters: The cited notice concerns the model- and date-code-specific voltage mismatch described above.
These historical notices are not a complete live recall search. Verify the product and current remedy through the CPSC and the manufacturer. If you identify a recalled product, stop using it and follow the applicable notice.
Stop using the heater and get help if
- Smoke, sparking, scorching, melted components or a persistent burning smell appears.
- A breaker or high-limit reset trips repeatedly.
- The heater keeps heating when the thermostat is set to stop.
- The exact model and date code match a recall notice.
- You suspect damaged or loose wiring, a faulty breaker or a voltage mismatch.
Switch off the circuit if you can do so safely, then contact a qualified electrician or the manufacturer’s service team. Do not open the unit to investigate an electrical fault.
