A sensory garden makes the experience of moving through and using a backyard its central design feature. Start by deciding who will use it and whether you want a calm retreat, an active place to explore, an educational garden or a mix. Then plan accessible routes, places to pause and sensory features people can reach. It can work in a large yard, a small space or containers; there is no single layout that suits every home.
Start with the people and purpose
A sensory garden is defined by its concentration of sensory experiences, not by a particular size or style. Before choosing plants or materials, consider who the garden is for, what it should make possible and how it will be maintained. The Sensory Trust planning guide recommends setting those aims before detailed design.
- Choose the mood: A quiet corner might use restrained colours, shelter and softer sounds. A more active space could offer varied textures, movement and features visitors can operate. These are design choices, not guaranteed effects.
- Consider users and abilities: Think about how people move, what they can reach, whether they tire easily and whether they have sensitivities to scent, pollen or particular textures.
- Plan for daily use: Account for seating, shade, shelter, maintenance access and how needs might change over time.
You can concentrate the sensory features in one destination, make the route itself engaging, or distribute interest throughout the yard. The best arrangement depends on the site and its users.
Map the route before selecting features
Sketch entrances, paths, turns, seating, sunny and shaded areas, and the locations of features visitors should be able to reach. Treat paths as part of the garden experience: a change in surface, direction or view can invite exploration, while clear edges and contrast around obstacles can help people with residual vision.

Choose path width, surface and gradient for the people using the space and the site conditions. The Sensory Trust design guide does not prescribe one set of dimensions for every backyard. Keep the main route straightforward to navigate; if you include more challenging elements such as slopes or steps, keep them off that route.
Place a seat where someone can pause without having to leave the garden’s main experience. If feasible, provide a choice of sun and shade or some shelter. Bring tactile plants, water, sculpture and other interactive elements within reach. A tree beside a path or fruit trained low enough to pick can turn a feature from something merely visible into something usable.

Choose sensory features that fit the space
Sight: colour, contrast and seasonal interest
Use flowers, foliage, bark, berries and hardscape to create visual interest through the seasons. A vivid planting area can act as a focal point; quieter groupings may suit a calmer zone. Contrast at path edges and around features can help people with residual vision distinguish changes. Offer texture through more than planting. Soft leaves, ridged bark, grasses, seed heads, smooth stone, rough wood and water can provide different sensations. Textured seats, walls and path materials can extend the experience to people who do not want to touch plants. Temporary materials such as leaves or straw can add a changeable element. Smell: use fragrance selectively
Combine scents that carry through the air with flowers that invite a closer smell and herbs whose fragrance is released by touch. Examples in the Sensory Trust guide include mock orange, roses, winter honeysuckle, violets, primroses, culinary herbs and scented geraniums. Strong fragrance or pollen may bother some visitors, including people with asthma. Ask about sensitivities before planting and avoid assuming that more scent is always better.
Sound and movement: make interaction optional
Grasses, trees, water, wildlife and wind-activated features can introduce sound and motion. Put interactive elements where visitors can reach or activate them. Wind chimes can be overwhelming in a small garden, so use them sparingly or choose a quieter feature.

Taste: keep edible plants identifiable
Edible planting can connect growing with eating, but visitors should be able to distinguish food crops from other plants. The Sensory Trust recommends keeping edible choices clearly recognised or grouping them in a dedicated area, particularly where children use the garden. Do not encourage anyone to eat unidentified plants.
Consider sensations beyond the five senses
Balance, temperature, enclosure, orientation, weight and wet-versus-dry contrasts can also shape how a garden feels. A sheltered nook, a sunny seat or a textured route may add these qualities without needing a complex feature. Consider how each element works for the intended users and keep challenging features away from the main accessible route.

A sensory garden invites touching, smelling, picking and handling. Choose robust materials and plants that can tolerate the intended level of interaction, and plan for replacing plants if needed. Include pruning in the maintenance plan so features remain reachable and shade or shelter is preserved.
Plant risks depend on context: who will use the garden, whether plant material might be eaten and whether visitors have skin sensitivities. The Sensory Trust plant guidance discusses assessing risk in that context. Do not assume a plant is suitable for every person; consult region-appropriate plant-safety advice when making final selections.
Use raised beds when they solve an access problem
A raised garden bed planter can bring planting within easier reach, and UF/IFAS includes raised beds among possible accessibility features alongside wide pathways. It is an option, not a universal requirement: choose the bed’s dimensions, material and placement around the users, their reach, the available space and the site. The University of Florida IFAS sensory garden guidance notes that sensory gardens can be created at any scale, including in containers.
