An outdoor game room can be an open lawn-game area, a covered patio, an enclosed garden room, or a children’s play space. Start by choosing who will use it and what they will do there; the right layout, structure, and safety measures depend on your site, climate, activities, and local requirements.
1. Decide who will use the space and which games belong there
List the intended users and activities before deciding how much space to build. A playset, lawn game, and table game have different clearance, surface, and shelter needs. If the space will serve several groups, distinguish active play from quieter seating or table games so one activity does not interfere with another.
For each activity, note whether it needs a fixed surface or equipment, whether it can be packed away, and whether it will be used in wet or cold weather. This first pass helps determine whether you need an open area, a sheltered gathering spot, or an enclosed room.
2. Measure usable area and map circulation
Measure the area you can actually use, accounting for boundaries, doors, existing trees, utilities, and any required access routes. Then map the space each activity needs, including movement around equipment and clear paths between the house, seating, storage, and play areas.

Keep the play or swing zone for one activity from crossing another activity’s route. There is no single clearance figure for every outdoor game room: use the equipment manufacturer’s instructions for specific play equipment, and plan other activities around their actual use.
3. Choose a visible, level location and plan drainage
For home playground equipment, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recommends a level location, clear of obstacles, away from roads and driveways, and visible from the home. It also recommends at least 6 feet between playground equipment and structures or obstacles, with additional clearance for swings. Those recommendations apply to playground equipment—not automatically to lawn games, furniture, or an enclosed structure. See the CPSC Outdoor Home Playground Safety Handbook.
For the project as a whole, consider how rainwater will move across and away from the site. Avoid a layout that traps water at entrances, seating, or play surfaces. The finished grading and drainage approach depends on the property and local requirements; the playground guidance is not a residential drainage specification.
4. Plan for sun, shade, wind, rain, and seasonal exposure
Observe the site at different times of day and consider which directions bring strong sun, prevailing wind, or rain. Shade or a roof can make some activities more comfortable, while an enclosed space may extend the season of use but change ventilation and access needs.

Assess local exposure to heat, flooding, and storms before choosing a layout or structure. South Australia’s sport-facility planning guidance identifies these as climate risks to consider, alongside design and operational factors; it is general facility guidance, not a residential building code. Government of South Australia: Sport Facility Planning and Design Considerations.
5. Choose a structure that fits the use
Decide whether activities call for an open layout, a roofed area, partial enclosure, or a fully enclosed room. Compare options by how much usable area they leave, how well they manage weather, whether they allow safe circulation and access, and what upkeep they require.
Any permanent structure may involve local requirements for construction, setbacks, drainage, fire safety, or electrical work. The sources cited here do not establish residential design dimensions or permit rules, so confirm requirements with the relevant local authority and qualified construction professionals before fixing the design.
6. Select materials and finishes for outdoor conditions
Choose materials based on exposure, expected maintenance, durability, and how surfaces perform when wet. Consider slip resistance where people will walk, play, or enter from outdoors, and corrosion resistance for exposed metal components.

For playground equipment specifically, CPSC advises treating metal to prevent corrosion and choosing wood that resists rot and insects. Those are equipment-focused recommendations, not a complete material specification for an outdoor room. For broader facility planning, South Australia’s guidance emphasizes durable, low-maintenance materials.
7. Plan lighting and safe circulation
Map how people will move through the space after dark, including the route from the house, entry points, steps, and transitions between surfaces. Lighting should support visibility without creating glare in play or seating areas.
Facility-planning guidance also identifies lighting, circulation, access and egress, equipment safety, and electrical compliance as design considerations. The right fixtures, wiring, and installation depend on the project and applicable local rules; use qualified professionals for electrical work.
8. Make access, movement, and seating comfortable
Think about who needs to enter, move around, reach game surfaces, and rest. Consider whether routes are usable for people with different mobility needs, whether seating is near the activities, and whether spectators can watch without standing in a play zone.

Accessibility and inclusive design are named considerations in facility-planning guidance, including the South Australian guidance. The sources do not establish residential accessibility dimensions, so confirm any applicable standards for your project rather than assuming a generic measurement.
9. Provide storage and protect equipment
Decide where loose items will go between uses: balls, rackets, game pieces, cushions, or children’s toys can otherwise obstruct routes or be exposed to weather. Place storage where users can reach it without crossing an active play area, and consider how equipment will be protected from rain, sun, and wind.
Storage needs vary with the games and structure. Plan the location and access as part of the layout rather than adding a container later where it may narrow a path or block a view.

Estimate the routine work the space will need: cleaning surfaces, maintaining finishes, checking drainage, and inspecting equipment. Guidance for recreation facilities recommends durable, low-maintenance materials and maintenance systems; the Sport and Recreation Victoria outdoor fitness equipment guidelines also address planning and maintenance for that specific equipment category.

If you install playground equipment, include periodic inspection and replacement of worn parts in the plan. The CPSC handbook is a source of playground-specific safety guidance, not a maintenance schedule for every kind of outdoor room.
11. Confirm safety and local requirements before construction
Before building, separate the checks for playground equipment from those for structures and site work. For home playground equipment, follow the manufacturer’s assembly and anchoring instructions, select impact-absorbing surfacing appropriate to the equipment’s height, and inspect for wear. CPSC says grass and dirt are not considered protective surfacing for elevated playground equipment.
CPSC reports that about 50,000 children go to U.S. hospital emergency rooms each year because of injuries on home playground equipment, and about 80% of those injuries occur in falls. These figures refer to home playground equipment, not backyard games generally or outdoor rooms; the retrieved handbook does not establish the publication year or underlying data period.
Separately, check local requirements for building, setbacks, drainage, fire safety, and electrical work before construction. The Illinois Department of Natural Resources planning and development facility guides show the range of site-planning topics that may matter—including area, dimensions, orientation, surfaces, drainage, irrigation, lighting, fencing, landscaping, accessibility, and maintenance—but do not provide universal residential specifications.
