For a backyard that feels cooler and greener, plan a shade tree, train climbing plants over a pergola, or combine both. A tree offers long-term living shade but takes time to mature; a planted pergola can create a leafy canopy sooner if its structure is built for the added weight and wind. In either case, map the sun and the places you want to sit before choosing a location or plant. A shade sail or canopy tent can help while living shade establishes.
How do I create natural shade in my backyard?
Start with the spot you want to use, then observe how sunlight reaches it across the day. The best position for a canopy depends on when you need shade, not just how the yard looks at midday. NSW Planning recommends checking sun positions at sunrise, selected times during the day, and sunset. Its guidance is written for an Australian planning context, but the observation method is useful wherever you garden.
- Track the sun. Note when direct sun reaches the seating area and which side it comes from. Consider summer afternoon sun separately from morning or seasonal sun.
- Choose the kind of shade. A tree suits a longer-term landscape plan; climbers over a pergola give you a supported garden canopy; a combination can provide both. A manufactured sail or tent can bridge the wait.
- Check the site before planting or building. Account for a tree’s mature size, nearby buildings, overhead wires, security lights, and other conflicts. For a pergola, choose a location and structure suited to the plant growth and local wind and weather.
- Match plants to local conditions. Climate, soil, water availability, and invasive-species status vary by region. Ask a local extension service or reputable regional nursery to help select suitable trees and climbers.
Illinois Extension suggests considering a tree on the south or west side of a yard to block intense summer afternoon sun. That is regional guidance, not a universal placement rule: the right location depends on your yard’s sun path, climate, and other site conditions.
Which shade option fits the yard?
| Option | Time to useful shade | Coverage and space | Installation and care |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shade tree | Long-term; a young tree takes time to mature and provide ample shade, according to Illinois Extension. | Coverage changes with the tree’s canopy and the sun’s position. Plan for mature height and nearby features. | Choose a locally suitable species and site. Illinois Extension advises watering a newly planted tree well during its first three years. |
| Pergola with climbers | Develops as climbers grow and are trained across the structure. | Creates shade over a defined area; coverage varies with foliage, season, and position relative to the sun. | The structure must account for foliage weight and wind. Train and maintain plants as they grow. |
| Shade sail or canopy tent | Can provide shade while plants establish. | Manufactured shade over a chosen area; it is not a living canopy. | Measure the site, use sturdy anchor points, secure the structure, and monitor wind and rain. |
| Tree plus pergola or other built shade | Combines immediate or developing built shade with longer-term tree growth. | Can address different parts of the yard or different times of day; plan each canopy for its own footprint. | Requires both suitable planting and sound construction. NSW Planning recommends combining natural and built shade in its Australian climate context. |
How do I choose and site a shade tree?
Choose for the mature tree and the yard you have, not only the sapling’s appearance. UF/IFAS advises considering mature height and nearby buildings, wires, and other site features before planting. Because a tree is a relatively permanent landscape choice, site selection and planting technique matter.

There is no single “best” afternoon-shade tree for every backyard: the sources here do not establish a universally suitable species. Illinois Extension’s south- or west-side suggestion addresses intense summer afternoon sun in its regional context, while local conditions determine which tree can thrive there.
Can I grow vines over a pergola for shade?
Yes. A pergola’s open top can support vigorous climbers and provide height for a garden canopy. The Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) lists rambling roses, clematis, honeysuckle, jasmine, and wisteria among possible climbers. These are options to assess, not universal recommendations: suitability depends on climate, exposure, maintenance needs, toxicity concerns where relevant, and local invasive status.

Build the support for a living canopy
Foliage adds weight, and a leafy structure can be buffeted by wind. RHS advises accounting for both when constructing a pergola. Its example dimensions and construction guidance are not a substitute for local building codes, engineering, soil conditions, or a site assessment. For a structure attached to a building or exposed to significant weather, confirm that the design, footings, connections, and materials suit the actual site.
Train and maintain the climbers
RHS advises guiding young shoots up the supports and across the crossbeams, tying them in as the canopy develops. Water young plants in summer and mulch around them. Dry roots can leave honeysuckle and clematis more susceptible to powdery mildew; some large-leaved or evergreen climbers can suffer scorch in exposed sites. Choose and care for plants with your local growing conditions in mind.

Decide whether seasonal shade is useful
NSW Planning recommends considering deciduous climbers for seasonal shading on pergolas. In climates where plants lose their leaves, that can mean a different balance of summer shade and winter light. The effect depends on local seasons and the chosen plant, so confirm suitability with a regional nursery or extension service.

Shade can reduce ultraviolet radiation (UVR), but it does not eliminate exposure. ARPANSA reports that a dense natural canopy can provide up to 90% UVR protection and a medium canopy up to 60%. These are general figures, not a guarantee for a particular backyard. The agency says protection varies with canopy density, position relative to the sun, shade height, deterioration, and scattered or reflected UV.

When sun protection is advised, use shade alongside other sun-protection measures. Scattered UV from the sky and UV reflected by surrounding surfaces can reach people under a canopy.
What can provide shade while trees and climbers grow?
A shade sail, canopy tent, umbrella, or awning can provide manufactured shade while a tree matures or climbers fill a pergola. These options do not replace a living canopy, and they need to suit the site and weather.
