Water flows across a carefully levelled weir into a catch basin, then a separate recirculation system returns it to the main pool. That second vessel, its plumbing and pumps, and the engineering needed to support the edge make this a custom construction project, not simply a different pool finish.
How an infinity-edge pool works
The main pool is built so water meets a lowered, precisely levelled wall called a weir. Water crossing that edge falls into a catch basin below. A separate edge recirculation system returns the water to the pool; the main pool has its own circulation and treatment equipment. The B.C. Guidelines for Pool Design call for a vanishing-edge system independent of the main pool system and back-siphoning protection between the pool and catch basin. Government of British Columbia, B.C. Guidelines for Pool Design, April 2025; a regional builder also describes the catch basin and dedicated edge pump as distinct system elements. The visual effect works best when the far edge meets a convincing backdrop, such as a distant view or a landscape that appears to continue beyond the water. The edge, basin, water level, and viewing angle all have to work together.
Is your property suitable?
A sloped lot can provide room below the pool for a catch basin and structure, but the slope also makes stability, drainage, and structural support important design questions. The B.C. guideline recommends geotechnical review by a competent individual where slope stability may be an issue. It also notes that geotechnical review is not part of the health authority’s construction permit review. Whether that review is required for your project depends on local rules and site conditions.
#1 Best Overall
A flat lot is not automatically disqualified. A regional pool contractor says a raised wall with a lower terrace or planted area can create an infinity-edge arrangement. The result may look more like a feature wall than a horizon that disappears into the landscape; the actual effect depends on sightline, grade, and design.
Before settling on a layout, have qualified local professionals assess the parcel and discuss:
- Site survey, slope stability, soil conditions, and structural support for the weir and basin.
- Groundwater, drainage, and where basin overflow will go.
- Excavation and concrete access, utilities, wind exposure, rainfall, and likely bather load.
- Pool and basin circulation, water replenishment, and maintenance access.
- Local setbacks, permits, inspections, barriers, and any drainage approvals that apply.
Design details that affect performance and safety
The technical figures below come from the Government of British Columbia’s April 2025 pool-design guideline. They are guidance for that jurisdiction, not universal residential code. Ask your designer and local authorities which standards apply to your project.
| Design item | B.C. guideline value or recommendation | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Weir level | Level tolerance of 1/16 inch | A level edge helps water sheet evenly across it. |
| Weir width and placement | At least 25 cm (10 in) wide; no more than 50% of the pool perimeter | Sets the edge’s dimensions and limits how much of the perimeter is designed to overflow. |
| Water depth on pool side | No more than 1.5 m (5 ft) | Relevant to the guideline’s vanishing-edge design. |
| Weir surface and marking | Slip-resistant surface, contrasting nose edging, and a contrasting “no walking” inscription at least 10 cm (4 in) high | Makes the edge easier to identify and cautions against walking on it. |
| Surge capacity | At least 85 L (3 ft³) per bather | Provides space for displaced water from bathers and other surges. |
| Catch-basin elevation and access | Catch basin no more than 0.46 m (18 in) below the weir elevation; grate it to permit emergency pool access | Connects basin layout with access and safety considerations. |
| Decking | Recommended 1.2 m (4 ft) around the pool except at the weir, and 1.2 m (4 ft) at catch-basin level | Provides space around both water areas. |
Surge capacity is not just a bather-count calculation. The B.C. guideline says it must account for displacement from bathers, water features, edge walls, rainfall, and wind-blown water. It allows the surge tank to provide the capacity or share it with the catch basin, and says the tank overflow line should sit below the catch-basin flood rim. An undersized surge volume can lead to basin overflow and interrupt the edge effect until water is replenished.

The guideline also recommends at least two catch-basin outlets that follow its main-drain and suction-entrapment guidance, adequate basin dimensions and drainage, and an overflow line when the basin contributes to surge capacity. These details need to be coordinated in the design rather than added after construction.
Plan barriers and access around both water areas
The pool and catch basin are separate water areas, so safety planning must account for both. The B.C. guideline recommends enclosing the whole area around the main pool and catch basin to reduce accidental falls and unauthorized entry. Confirm the applicable barrier rules and layout with local authorities; the B.C. recommendations are not a substitute for local requirements.

Include emergency access, safe routes around the pool, and access at catch-basin level in the design conversation. A historical 2010 Singapore Building and Construction Authority publication discusses the hazard of floats passing over elevated infinity edges when no safety barrier prevents it; it is a useful reminder to consider the edge as a distinct hazard, not a current local code. There is no reliable universal price or percentage premium for adding a vanishing edge. The cost depends on local labor and materials, access, slope and soil conditions, structural support, basin size, edge length, finishes, utilities, permits, and overall scope.
Best Value
For a meaningful comparison, ask bidders to price the same pool plan both with and without the vanishing edge, then itemize the incremental work. The edge scope can include the catch basin, independent recirculation and plumbing, precise weir construction, level control, autofill, finishes, and any additional structural or geotechnical work. Ask each bidder to state assumptions for site work and engineering so you can compare like with like.
Quick Recap
Questions to take to your designer or builder
- What site survey, geotechnical assessment, and structural design are appropriate for this parcel?
- How will the catch basin, surge volume, overflow routing, and independent edge pump be sized for bathers, wind, rainfall, and water features?
- Which permits, inspections, setbacks, barriers, and drainage approvals apply here?
- How will the enclosure cover both the main pool and catch basin while preserving emergency access?
- Can you separate the standard pool scope from the additional vanishing-edge scope in the bid?
- What maintenance, water replenishment, and pump operating schedule should I expect for this design?
