Not necessarily. A leafless or brown plant in winter may be dormant, have living roots beneath dead-looking top growth, or have suffered damage to only some buds or branches. Check stems, buds and—when appropriate—roots before pruning or discarding it; the right timing depends on the plant and its growing conditions.
Why a plant can look dead in winter
Dormancy is a normal seasonal state, not proof that a plant has died. Many temperate woody plants stop active growth and protect undeveloped shoots in buds. Those buds may need a species-specific period of cold before growth resumes, so one plant’s calendar is not a reliable guide to another’s. Oregon State University Extension explains the differences using forsythia and peach as examples: winter dormancy in plants.
Herbaceous perennials can lose all visible growth above ground while their roots remain alive through winter. Some woody perennial herbs, including lavender, rosemary, sage and thyme, may stay green instead. These patterns apply to the plant types described, not to every houseplant or climate. See Oregon State University Extension’s perennial herb guidance.
Winter damage can also affect only part of a plant. Brown foliage or dead twig tips do not establish that the entire plant is dead; living stems, buds or roots may remain.

How to check whether a plant is alive
Scrape a small spot on a woody stem
On a small twig, gently scrape away a tiny patch of outer bark. Green tissue beneath it supports the conclusion that the twig is alive; brown or gray tissue suggests that section is dead. Check a few locations, including farther down a branch if its tip looks damaged, because injury may be limited to individual twigs or tips. Keep the scrape small. Illinois Extension describes this check in its guide to winter damage on evergreens.
Inspect a bud only if needed
If you can spare one bud, cut it across and look at the interior. Succulent green tissue supports viability; discoloration may indicate cold injury. Andrew Holsinger, a University of Illinois Extension horticulture educator, says, “If the bud has become discolored it may have been damaged,” in Illinois Extension’s winter-damage guidance. A single bud tells you about that bud, not the whole plant, so avoid cutting many buds from a valuable specimen.

Look at roots and crowns when symptoms point below ground
Roots can be difficult to diagnose by looking at the canopy alone. Penn State Extension lists slow growth, premature wilting, yellowing or leaf fall, and few or no healthy white roots or root tips among signs associated with root death. Root texture and healthy tips matter; color by itself is not decisive, since some azaleas and rhododendrons naturally have dark roots. Review Penn State Extension’s root-death guidance if decline is extensive or root problems seem likely.

Evergreen foliage can lose moisture faster than a plant can replace it during winter, leaving needles or leaves brown even when some stems or buds remain viable. Snow cover can moderate soil temperatures and reduce freeze-thaw exposure around roots and crowns in outdoor landscapes; that is not a reason to apply snow or mulch to an indoor pot. Illinois Extension explains winter desiccation and the limits of judging evergreens by their appearance in its evergreen damage article, while the University of Minnesota Extension discusses snow’s insulating effect in winter plant protection guidance.

Confirmed dead tips or branches will not recover, but that does not mean every branch—or the whole plant—is dead. Penn State Extension’s article, dated May 15, 2026, recommends checking for green tissue beneath scraped bark and removing completely dead branches: winter injury to ornamental plants. Some evergreen limbs that look damaged warrant waiting for clearer signs of viability; Illinois Extension notes that in some pine and spruce species, dead tips may not produce replacement growth.

What to do before pruning or giving up
- Identify the plant if possible. Dormancy and bud-break timing vary by species, so use its normal growth cycle rather than a generic date.
- Check more than one place. Compare a few stems and, if needed, a carefully selected bud. A dead-looking tip is not a diagnosis of the rest of the plant.
- Wait when signs are inconclusive. If a plant is otherwise stable, allow for its usual growing season before deciding that uncertain branches are dead. Some evergreens need time before damage is clear.
- Prune confirmed dead wood with the plant’s timing in mind. Penn State recommends removing completely dead branches, but pruning at the wrong time can affect buds. Illinois Extension’s winter pruning guidance discusses why the plant and its buds matter.
- Protect outdoor perennial roots appropriately. Oregon State University Extension recommends 2 to 4 inches of shredded bark, leaves or similar mulch around perennial herbs. This is outdoor guidance, not a houseplant instruction; see its perennial herb article.
- Ask for local help if decline is broad or the cause is unclear. A local Cooperative Extension office or plant diagnostic clinic can interpret symptoms in the context of your species and climate. Penn State’s root-death article stresses investigating causes rather than relying on one visual sign.
