Are Batteries for Large Home Appliances a Good Idea?

A home battery may back up large appliances, but the right fit depends on output, startup demand, usable energy, backed-up circuits and local costs.

Sometimes—but a home battery is a good fit only when its output, usable energy, installation cost and intended use match your household’s needs. It may provide backup during outages or help store solar power for later, but a battery’s kilowatt-hours alone do not show whether it can start and run a refrigerator, air conditioner or other major appliance.

What a home battery can—and cannot—do

A residential battery stores electricity for use later. The U.S. Department of Energy describes two common uses: backup power during outages and storing daytime solar generation for later use. Storage may also be worth considering where net metering does not credit exported solar electricity one-for-one, or where time-of-use or demand-charge rates affect bills. The value depends on the household’s circumstances and utility rate; these uses are not interchangeable or automatically cost-effective. DOE’s Home Upgrades guidance discusses these applications.

A battery can serve a large appliance only if the system is designed to supply that appliance’s electrical demand, including startup needs where applicable. It may back up selected circuits rather than the entire home, so confirm exactly which appliances and circuits remain powered during an outage.

Understand power, energy and startup demand

  • Power, measured in kilowatts (kW), indicates how much electrical load the battery can supply at one time. Compare the battery’s continuous output with the appliances and other backed-up loads that may run simultaneously.
  • Surge output matters for equipment with motors or compressors that can draw extra power when starting. Check the appliance and battery documentation; the sources cited here do not establish startup requirements for any particular appliance.
  • Energy, measured in kilowatt-hours (kWh), indicates how much electricity is stored. Check usable capacity, not just a headline or nominal capacity, and account for the system’s operating limits and reserve settings.
  • Runtime depends on actual appliance consumption, usable battery energy, system settings and which other loads are running. A simple division using a guessed appliance draw is not a tested runtime estimate.

The National Laboratory of the Rockies’ 2024b Annual Technology Baseline (ATB) uses a representative residential system rated at 5 kW and 12.5 kWh, with 85% representative round-trip efficiency. These are modeling assumptions—not a recommended size for a particular home, a product specification or a guarantee of performance. Its model also uses a 15-year lifetime and includes augmentation in fixed operation-and-maintenance assumptions to maintain rated capacity over that modeled period; this is not a universal warranty or service-life promise. See the ATB’s residential battery-storage assumptions.

How to assess a battery for your appliances

  1. List what you need during an outage. Identify the appliances and circuits that matter most, and distinguish essential backup from whole-home backup.
  2. Gather the electrical data. Use appliance labels and manufacturer documentation for operating demand and, where relevant, motor or compressor startup requirements. Do not assume appliances with similar names or sizes draw the same power.
  3. Check the proposed system’s ratings. Compare continuous output and surge capability with the loads that could operate together. Separately check usable energy against the energy those loads would consume over the period you want backup.
  4. Confirm the actual backup design. Ask which circuits will be backed up, how the system handles reserve settings and what operating mode is intended. Solar self-consumption, outage reserve and shifting electricity use to different tariff periods can call for different settings.
  5. Get a local installed quote and check local requirements. Installation, interconnection rules, tariffs and costs vary. A national model is not a local price or a quote for your home.
  6. Compare the financial case with the value you place on backup. Consider local rates and solar arrangements alongside the practical value of keeping selected loads running during an outage. Do not assume bill savings or a payback period without household-specific figures.

A qualified installer can use your actual loads and backup priorities to assess sizing and compatibility. The evidence cited here does not establish runtime for a particular appliance or home; that requires appliance data and the specifications of the proposed system.

When the economics may make sense

The financial case depends on battery cost, local electricity rates, solar compensation rules, usage patterns and how much you value outage protection. In its 2021 analysis of distributed storage deployment, NREL identified battery costs and the value placed on backup power as important modeled drivers. The analysis does not show that a battery will pay for itself in any particular household. Its estimate of up to 490 GW of behind-the-meter storage by 2050 describes modeled U.S. economic potential across residential, commercial and industrial sectors—not a forecast of household installations. DOE’s Home Upgrades page describes a 30% battery-storage tax credit. Credit availability, eligibility and tax-year treatment can change and depend on individual circumstances. Verify current requirements with IRS guidance or a qualified tax professional before including a credit in your purchase calculation. DOE’s page provides its current description.

Safety and installation considerations

Choose a system using its product documentation and the requirements applicable where it will be installed; have a qualified professional assess the installation. A 2020 UK government research publication identifies large domestic battery systems as a safety hazard and notes that few incidents were publicly known at that time. That historical observation is not a current incident rate, a comparison of today’s products or installation guidance for a U.S. home. Read the UK publication.

Bottom line for homeowners

A home battery can be worthwhile for selected appliance backup or solar shifting when its power output, startup capability, usable energy and installed cost fit the home. Decide from actual appliance data, the circuits you want backed up, local rates and an installation quote—not from a battery’s kWh rating alone. Without those details, no reliable appliance runtime or universal payback can be stated.
