If your Bandit chipper is making poor chips, vibrating, slipping belts or plugging, start by identifying the symptom and checking the wear parts and adjustments specified for your exact machine. Bandit identifies dull knives as the main cause of poor cutting performance, but the correct clearances and procedures vary by model. Use the operator’s manual for your machine’s model, year and serial number before adjusting anything.
Start with safety and the correct manual
Do not run a chipper that needs repair or inspect rotating parts while they are moving. Bandit’s safety guidance says, “Never operate Bandit equipment that is in need of repair,” and warns that high-pressure hydraulic oil can puncture skin. Keep away from hydraulic leaks and arrange qualified service rather than trying to locate a leak by hand. Read Bandit’s Commitment to Safety guidance, but use the machine’s own manual for every maintenance procedure.
Find the manual for your machine using its model, model year and serial number. Bandit’s Support page explains how to request a manual and describes dealer, phone and onsite service support. Instructions below are general unless a model is named.
If chip quality is poor or the chipper keeps plugging
Check knife condition first
Bandit identifies dull knives as the main cause of poor cutting performance. Dull knives can produce poor chips, increase strain and contribute to discharge plugging. Dirt, grit or foreign material, an incorrect sharpening angle, force-feeding faster than the machine accepts material, and incorrect knife-to-anvil clearance can also impair performance or dull knives. Follow the operating guidance for your machine; do not increase feed rate beyond what the machine accepts. See Bandit’s parts guidance for information on knives and related hardware.

Inspect the anvil and verify the model-specific clearance
A rounded or worn anvil can widen the gap between the knife and anvil, degrading chip quality. Bandit recommends inspecting anvil condition daily and checking clearance weekly, as well as when knives are changed or sharpened. The cited manuals use the closest knife when setting clearance, but the required measurement is not universal.

These examples are for those models only; do not use one model’s measurement on another chipper. If you cannot confirm the correct specification, ask Bandit or an authorized dealer before adjusting the anvil.

If the chipper vibrates or seems to be under excess load
Dull knives can increase chipping vibration and strain on knives, mounts, disc or drum bearings, and the machine. New or unusual vibration is a reason to stop and inspect the chipper according to its manual. Knife condition is one possible contributor, not a diagnosis of every vibration cause; do not keep operating in an attempt to see whether the vibration clears.
If belts slip or look glazed
Bandit says new belts stretch soon after operation. Its general adjustment guidance is to adjust new belts after one hour, then every four hours until they stop stretching. Belts that are not adjusted as they stretch can slip and glaze, potentially ruining them. Follow the exact belt procedure for your model, and never inspect or adjust belts around moving components. If you have a drum chipper with a shear-bar concern
This applies to Bandit hand-fed drum chippers, not disc machines. Bandit describes the shear bar as a standard feature on its hand-fed drum chippers and a secondary knife intended to improve the chance of severing rope or line drawn into the drum. Improper adjustment may prevent that function or damage the chipper. Bandit recommends checking the shear bar at 50 hours or when knives are changed or sharpened. Use the correct manual and the related service material; do not apply this drum-specific instruction to a disc chipper.
If feed or hydraulic performance is the concern
Bandit lists a service video about checking and adjusting hydraulic pressures on hand-fed chippers, but the reviewed material does not establish one pressure value or a complete pressure-based diagnosis for every model and symptom. Consult the manual for your machine and contact qualified service support if feeding remains poor or a hydraulic adjustment is needed. Never approach a hydraulic leak.

Choose the next check by symptom and machine
- Poor chips or plugging: start with knife sharpness and condition, then inspect the anvil and confirm the manual’s clearance.
- New or unusual vibration: stop and inspect according to the manual; dull knives are one possible cause, but not the only one.
- Slipping or glazed belts: verify the belt procedure and adjustment schedule for the machine.
- Shear-bar concern: first confirm that the machine is a hand-fed drum chipper, then follow its model-specific instructions.
- Persistent feed or hydraulic trouble: use model-specific service guidance and qualified support rather than relying on a universal pressure figure.
