A homeowner digging a backyard pool in Neuville-sur-Saône, near Lyon, reportedly uncovered five gold bars and many coins in May 2025. News reports put the hoard at about €700,000—roughly $800,000 in the reporting—but it was a buried cache of previously acquired gold, not a newly discovered natural deposit.
What was found during the pool excavation?
The homeowner reportedly discovered five numbered gold bars and many coins packed in plastic bags while the garden was being excavated for a swimming pool. The find was reported in May 2025. The homeowner had bought the property about a year earlier, according to 20 Minutes.
The story became public in November, after the town confirmed it. The homeowner reported the discovery to local authorities, and the regional cultural affairs directorate, DRAC, was involved in assessing whether the objects had archaeological or scientific interest, according to The Independent and 20 Minutes.
Why was the find reported as worth $800,000?
Reports put the hoard’s value at about €700,000. CBS News/AFP rendered that estimate as about $800,000; the dollar figure is a news conversion of the euro estimate, not a separate appraisal. The available reports do not identify who valued the cache, when it was valued, or what method was used. It should not be read as a verified current-market value. CBS News

What authorities reportedly learned about the gold
Reports say cultural authorities found no archaeological significance. Police inquiries reportedly traced the bars to gold that had been legally acquired and melted at a business in the Lyon region roughly 15 to 20 years earlier. The numbers on the bars helped investigators trace their origin, according to 20 Minutes.
Those are separate findings: an assessment of archaeological interest does not establish who owned or buried the items, while tracing the gold’s earlier legal acquisition does not reveal who later placed it in the garden.

- DIGITAL TARGET ID: Numeric scale (0–99) helps identify metal conductivity for precise target detection.
- IRON RESOLUTION: Improved discrimination allows better separation of valuable targets from iron trash.
- ELECTRONIC PINPOINTING: Non-motion All-Metal Mode helps accurately locate detected targets.
- ADJUSTABLE FREQUENCY: Minimize interference in crowded areas for a smoother detecting experience.
- SEARCHCOIL COVER INCLUDED: Protective cover shields the searchcoil from scratches, rocks, and debris to extend coil life and maintain reliable detection performance.
How did the gold get there?
The reports do not answer that question. The property’s previous owner had died, and no depositor or reason for burying the gold was identified. The Independent reported a local-authority spokesperson saying: “There were no clues on how it got there and the previous owner of the land had died.” The outlet identified the speaker as a spokesperson for the Neuville-sur-Saône local authority, not by name. Why could the homeowner keep the find?
News reports say the homeowner was allowed to keep the gold after authorities found no archaeological significance and police inquiries traced it to legal acquisition. That describes the reported outcome in this case; it is not a general ruling about buried valuables or advice for another property owner.

This was an unusual find during ordinary residential excavation, not evidence that pool projects generally uncover valuables. The practical point is straightforward: if excavation unexpectedly exposes objects that may be valuable or historically significant, pause work in the immediate area and contact the relevant local authorities before removing or disposing of them. The French reports describe the homeowner notifying authorities; they do not establish a universal legal procedure for other locations.
