Backyard Tree Danger: What to Do if It Might Fall

A newly leaning tree can signal root or structural damage. Keep people away, stay clear of wires, and arrange a qualified on-site assessment.

If a backyard tree has started leaning, its roots are lifting, or it could hit a person, home, road, or power line, keep people away and arrange a prompt on-site assessment by a qualified arborist. If it is on or near electrical wires, stay clear and contact the utility. Do not try to straighten or remove a dangerous mature tree yourself.

What makes a leaning tree urgent?

A new or worsening lean deserves more urgent attention than a long-standing lean, but the angle alone cannot tell you whether a tree will fall. The important questions are whether the tree has moved recently, whether its roots or trunk show damage, and what it could strike if it failed.

From a safe distance, look for signs such as:

  • Roots broken, newly exposed, or lifting out of the soil.
  • A raised or shifting area of soil around the base, suggesting root-plate movement.
  • Cracks in the trunk or substantial structural damage.
  • Broken or hanging limbs.

Do not approach the tree to inspect these signs closely. A tree with possible root or trunk failure that could fall toward people, a building, a roadway, or another target needs prompt professional attention. A lean by itself does not establish that removal is necessary; an on-site professional must assess the tree and its surroundings.

What to do now

  1. Keep people and pets away. Block access to the likely fall area and stay clear of broken or hanging limbs. Do not stand beneath the tree while deciding what to do.
  2. Check for a utility hazard from a distance. If the tree is touching, on, or close to electrical lines, do not approach, move branches, or try to determine whether a wire is live. Contact the local utility; work near electrical lines belongs to qualified utility tree workers.
  3. Arrange an on-site assessment. Contact an ISA Certified Arborist or another suitably qualified local tree-risk professional. Explain whether the lean is new or worsening, describe visible root or trunk damage, identify nearby targets, and mention any wires.
  4. Follow emergency procedures if danger is immediate. If people face immediate danger or the tree blocks a roadway, contact local emergency services or the relevant public authority. Emergency routing varies by location.

What not to do

  • Do not push, pull, stake, climb, or try to straighten a newly shifted mature tree. Its root system or trunk may be compromised, and an attempted fix does not establish that it is safe.
  • Do not use a chainsaw on a damaged tree or a limb under tension. Storm cleanup can be dangerous even for trained professionals.
  • Do not work on a tree near electrical lines. Leave that hazard to the utility and qualified line-clearance workers.

What to ask the arborist

Ask the professional to explain the signs found on site, which people or structures are exposed, and what options are appropriate. Those options may include monitoring or mitigation, or removal if the assessment supports it. The decision should account for the tree’s condition and the consequences of failure—not just its lean.

BlumeTrec 14.5FT Pole Saw with Adjustable Length for Tree Trimming, Lightweight Manual Pruning Saw with Mn Steel Blade, Long Extension Branch Cutter High Reach for Yard, Garden, Patio & Forestry Use
  • Sharp Mn Steel Blade for Fast & Clean Cuts: This pole saw uses a sharp three-sided edge with a double-sided barb design to grip branches securely and cut smoothly from multiple angles. The Mn steel blade is durable, rust-resistant, and lightweight, delivering fast, clean cuts. This is a manual pole saw with detachable pole sections for adjustable reach, not pruner, not a telescoping pole; it is neither electric nor battery-powered.
  • Sturdy Steel Pole Reinforced for Secure Use: This tree branch cutter combines stainless steel poles and Mn steel blade, built for long-term use. The powder-coated finish prevents rust, and the anti-slip grip ensures stable control. An extra screw secures the saw head firmly to the pole, preventing loosening. Strong enough to prune higher branches without climbing ladders, it helps reduce risks and makes outdoor trimming safer and more reliable.
  • Adjustable Length & Quick Assembly: This tree trimmer has three options: 8.5ft (6 sections), 11ft (8 sections), and 14.5ft (11 sections). Each stainless steel pole is rust-resistant with a matte finish for durability. The modular design lets you connect or remove sections quickly to adjust the length. Simple to assemble in a few steps, it adapts easily to close hand pruning or trimming tall trees, saving time and effort in your yard work.
  • Safe High Reach Pruning Without Ladders: This lightweight manual cutting saw extends up to 14.5ft, letting you prune tall branches from the ground without ladders. It reduces fall risks and increases safety, while the anti-slip grip lowers fatigue. Easy for women and seniors to handle, it makes tall tree pruning, patio care, and yard maintenance more efficient. A reliable tool that combines safety and comfort for long-term outdoor use.
  • Versatile Pruning Saw for Garden & Forestry: This extendable pruning saw works both handheld and extended for shrubs, hedges, and tall branches. Use it short for close trimming or fully extended for oaks, palms, pines, and firs. Perfect for yards, gardens, patios, and forestry tasks, it suits both home gardening and professional landscaping. With one tool for high and low pruning, it saves space while providing durable, versatile performance.
  • What evidence of root, trunk, or limb damage did you find?
  • What could the tree hit if it failed?
  • What mitigation is appropriate, and is removal necessary?
  • Are utility workers or another authority needed before work can begin?

Why a degree threshold is not a universal rule

There is no single lean angle that safely predicts whether every tree will fall. Texas A&M Forest Service gives thresholds for mature trees in a flooding-damage context; those figures should not be applied as a universal rule for trees in other conditions or locations. A tree’s recent movement, structural damage, targets, and on-site findings matter.

When the tree has leaned for a long time

An established lean has a different history from a tree that has suddenly shifted, but it still merits professional review if you are concerned—especially if you notice new root movement, trunk cracks, broken limbs, or a change in angle. Do not assume the tree is safe merely because it has leaned for years.

This is general safety guidance, not an inspection of a particular tree. Storm- and flood-damage recommendations may be context-specific, and utility procedures and professional credential requirements vary by location. UF/IFAS advises homeowners not to attempt all storm-damage work themselves and recommends qualified help for hazardous assessment and work near homes or other targets.
