The “Automated Toaster System” is a documented DIY prototype that uses a room-light sensor to start a toast cycle, servos to pull a toaster lever, and sensors to monitor heating and detect when toast rises. It is a specific 2023 project—not a standardized product or evidence of a commercially certified appliance.
What the Automated Toaster System is
Team IOT Group 3 published the project on Hackster.io on April 20, 2023. The authors describe it as “A smart toaster that automatically makes your toast in the morning and monitors it’s progress using the aid of multiple sensors.” The project page includes code, schematics, printable mount and spool files, and ThingSpeak graphs. How the prototype works
The build assigns separate jobs to three Particle Argon boards. One is placed in the bedroom, another at the toaster, and a third handles toast-ejection detection.
- Detect room lighting: A photoresistor connected to the bedroom board detects a change in room light and sends an event to the toaster-side board.
- Operate the toaster lever: The toaster-side board controls two continuous-rotation servos mounted at the toaster base. The servos pull the appliance lever to begin the cycle.
- Report temperature: A thermocouple connected through a MAX31855 amplifier breakout provides temperature readings to the toaster-side board. The published code samples temperature every four seconds during a toast cycle and every 30 minutes while idle.
- Detect toast rising: An HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor mounted above the toaster measures distance. The code waits for repeated readings below a threshold before publishing a completion event.
- Alert the user: Events activate a bedroom speaker and LED alert.
Parts and toaster compatibility
The project’s bill of materials lists three Particle Argon boards, three full-size solderless breadboards, a photoresistor, an HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor, a MAX31855 thermocouple amplifier breakout, a thermocouple, two continuous-rotation servos, a speaker, resistors, and wires. The named toaster is an Elite Gourmet ECT-1027.

The parts list documents what this build uses; it does not establish that the named toaster is required or that the mechanism will fit other models without adjustment. In particular, the project authors say the ultrasonic distance threshold “will need to be tweaked for each individual toaster.” Mounting position and the toaster’s geometry therefore matter to toast detection.
What the project does—and does not—establish
The published page is useful as a build reference, but it does not provide controlled accuracy or long-term reliability results, independent testing, or electrical and fire-safety certification. The code’s sampling intervals and distance threshold are implementation details, not universal settings or validated performance figures. Anyone adapting the design must assess the mechanical fit, sensor calibration, and safety of working around a heating appliance; the project page alone is not evidence that a modified toaster is safe for unattended operation.

How it fits into toaster-control design
Other patent records describe different approaches to sensing and controlling heating appliances, but they do not show that this project uses those designs. A 2024 patent application discusses temperature-sensor control with toaster embodiments involving an NTC or infrared sensor (patent application published in 2024). A 1992 patent describes an insulating support plate carrying toaster controls, including temperature adjustment and power cutoff after a heating period (1992 toaster-control patent). These records offer design context, not proof of the prototype’s performance or lineage.
