Atwood Furnace Troubleshooting: Safe Checks for Common Problems

Start with the furnace’s data plate and matching manual. Check simple thermostat, power and airflow issues, but treat gas odor, repeated ignition failure and erratic operation as reasons to stop and seek qualified service.

If your Atwood furnace will not start, first identify the model on its data plate and use that model’s manual: Atwood and Dometic furnace families do not share one universal troubleshooting or LED-code chart. You can safely check thermostat settings, power and unobstructed vents, but stop if you smell gas, ignition repeatedly fails, or the furnace runs erratically or ignites with a delay.

Before troubleshooting, make the furnace safe

If you smell gas, do not operate or repeatedly cycle the furnace. Dometic’s owner’s manual says, “Never operate the furnace if you smell gas.” Extinguish open flames, evacuate everyone from the vehicle and shut off the LP supply. Treat the odor as an urgent service issue.

Stop using the furnace and call a service agency if it cycles erratically or ignition is delayed. Do not attempt burner adjustment, gas-pressure testing, vent repair or control-board replacement as a quick fix. Dometic says installation, repair and preventive maintenance should be handled by a qualified service technician.

Identify the furnace before using a fault chart

Read the data plate to find the exact model and product information, then locate its matching manual. The legacy AFMD models, medium-furnace models and DF-series furnaces have different instructions and fault-code tables; a code or reset procedure for one family may not apply to another. The manuals cited here include the legacy AFM technical manual, owner safety and operating manual, medium-furnace installation manual and DF-series instructions.

Dometic DFMD30111 Medium Furnace - Low-Profile, Quiet LP Gas Furnace - Easy Maintenance with Superior Air Delivery
  • POWERFUL HEATING: With a heating capacity of 30,000 BTUs, this Dometic furnace is capable of heating up medium-sized RVs and trailers quickly and efficiently.
  • EFFICIENT AIRFLOW: The design style of this heat exchanger maximizes air distribution, providing a more even airflow that reduces hot and cold spots in the vehicle. It heats the coach quicker and with less gas consumption.
  • QUIET OPERATION: This furnace is engineered with reduced air turbulence for a noticeably quieter operation, providing a comfortable and peaceful environment inside the vehicle.
  • COMPACT DESIGN: The low-profile, compact design measures 7-3/8 in. x 16-1/2 in. x 20 in. (H x W x D), making it easy to install in a horizontal or vertical configuration, while still offering superior air delivery.
  • EASY MAINTENANCE: The Dometic DFSD 12111 Small Furnace has a redesigned, durable stamped steel door, sold separately (select models only). It is 12 V DC powered unit and engineered for easy maintenance. All of these features make it an excellent choice for RV and trailer owners who want a reliable and efficient furnace for their travels.

Keep combustion-air and exhaust openings, return-air paths and warm-air vents clear. Never run the furnace with a blocked vent. Do not dismantle the combustion or gas system to clear an obstruction.

If nothing happens and the blower stays off

For the medium-furnace models covered by its manual, these are owner-level checks:

FOGATTI RV Furnace 35,000 BTU for Camper, Motorhome, RV Owners
  • Rapid Heating: Powerful 35,000 BTU max output (4 Power Leverls, adjustable down to 17,000 BTU) delivers 320CFM airflow for rapid heating in campers, motorhomes, and trailers.
  • Whisper-Quiet Sleep Mode: FOGATTI RV Furnace operates at just 40dB in sleep mode—quieter than a library, ensuring undisturbed rest for deep sleep on the road.
  • Smart Control: Unlike basic rv gas furnace, ours offers 3 modes (quick heat/standard/sleep) and fault monitor alerts for easy troubleshooting.
  • Space-saving: Compatible with most RV furnace brands for simple replacement. Dimensions: 8"H x 17-3/4"W x 20.1"D, this RV furnace replacement delivers powerful heating in tight spaces, featuring versatile horizontal/vertical mounting.
  • High-Efficiency Heat Exchange: Upgraded heat exchanger maximizes gas efficiency, extending travel range. Outputs up to 104°F for reliable performance even in sub-zero.
  • Set the thermostat to Heat and above the current room temperature.
  • Check whether the main fuse has blown and whether the furnace breaker is off or tripped.
  • Consider whether RV 12-volt power is low. Check voltage only if you are comfortable doing so and the applicable manual supports it.
  • Make sure the intake and vents are not obstructed.
  • If the manual identifies a lockout reset for your model, follow that procedure exactly. The medium-furnace manual describes turning the thermostat off for 10 seconds and then back on; it allows up to three repetitions in the specific situation it covers.

These checks are not a universal Atwood procedure. The AFM technical manual separately directs owners to stop and contact a dealer or local RV service agency if the blower does not start or stops before the ignition cycle. Follow your furnace’s own instructions rather than combining procedures from different models.

If the blower runs but the burner does not light

A blower that runs without heat can indicate air in the propane line or an unsuitable thermostat setting on the medium-furnace models covered by Dometic’s troubleshooting table. That manual suggests purging air by operating another downstream propane appliance, such as a cooktop. Do not try this if you smell gas, have had repeated ignition failures, or your model’s manual gives a different warning or procedure.

Legacy AFM models use an automatic ignition sequence that includes a blower purge. Their manual says not to light the burner by hand and instructs owners to stop and contact a dealer or local RV service agency after three unsuccessful ignition attempts. Do not keep cycling the furnace after repeated failures.

If the furnace starts but shuts off before reaching temperature

For the medium-furnace models covered by its manual, check for covered or obstructed intake and vents. Clear only accessible obstructions without taking apart the furnace. If the furnace continues to cycle on its limit, behaves erratically or has delayed ignition, shut it down and arrange qualified service.

What an LED fault code can—and cannot—tell you

Read the control-board LED only as directed in the manual for your exact furnace. The following signals are from one Dometic medium-furnace fault table, not a universal Atwood reference:

Signal in that manual Meaning listed
Steady on; no flashing Internal circuit-board failure; hard lockout
One flash, then a three-second pause Limit-switch or airflow problem; soft lockout
Two flashes Flame-sense fault; hard lockout
Three flashes Ignition lockout; soft lockout with a one-hour retry

A separate current DF-series table lists four flashes for high voltage (16–17 V) and five flashes for low voltage (8–9 V) on the models it covers. Those voltage ranges and code meanings should not be applied to other furnace families. Confirm the model and consult its manual before interpreting a flash pattern or attempting a reset.

When to arrange professional service

Use a qualified RV service technician for repair, preventive maintenance, recurring lockouts and faults involving ignition, combustion, gas components, wiring or the control board. Dometic’s current DF-series manual calls for annual maintenance by a qualified RV service technician and says to use only parts specifically approved for the furnace.

When requesting service or parts, provide the model and product or part number from the data plate. Use the official parts list or contact a Dometic service partner or dealer; the correct replacement part depends on the furnace model.
